SSL on iPad

then outgoing smtp server setting on my iPad keeps defaulting to "on". My mail is then rejected by my server. I go into settings and click the ssl button to off and the mail goes. then next time I send mail the same thing happens - I go back to the settings and SSL is on. I have to manually click it off each time I send mail. This was never a problem until the last couple days. I've tried resetting and re-syncing and re-installing. Nothing seems to help. Is anyone else experiencing this problem?
