Any way to stop phone from vibrating when on a call?

It happens all the time.

I'm on a call, thoroughly enjoying life, in a state of total and utter relaxation.

Then: BZZTZTZTZZTZZTZZZZZTTZZ!!!!

Right in my ear, the iPhone completely shatters my calm. All because I got a text or an e-mail.

I appreciate the notification, and I have my iPhone set to vibrate for texts and e-mails because when the phone's in my pocket the vibration definitely helps to notify me, but maybe the tone/chyme is enough when I'm on a call.

And by maybe, I mean definitely. There is no good reason I can think of why I'd want this sneak attach vibration terrorizing the side of my skull. It's simply unpleasant and often times unnerving.

Does anyone know if there's anything that can be done about it? I've searched, but have come up with nothing apart from completely disabling the vibrate option, or remembering to always switch the phone to silent (with vibrate off for silent in the settings) every time I take or make a call, which is awfully inconvenient and still results in occasionally forgetting, relaxing and then being punished.

Maybe there's a setting I'm missing somewhere?

Thanks for taking the time.

This problem drives me crazy. Just about every time I answer a phone call the thing vibrates. My theory is that the phone does a "new notification" check whenever you initiate a phone call so the likelyhood of getting your skull rattled is much higher.

I called the tech support line just to verify that there is no way to turn it off and he confirmed that it's "always been that way."

Checking around for a fix to this issue, I can see that it has been a problem for many years for iPhone users, and no fix yet to this day. I'm using an iPhone 4 with iOS 6.0.1 (10A523) and am also one of those folks that gets anywhere from 6 - 7 emails at once (I manage a team). Some have said that the buzzing noise does not come through the call, but it most certainly does. "Aha, you're on an iPhone, I see" is a comment I've gotten before. This is an irritating, embarassing issue with circus workarounds at best and for an organization that prides itself on exceptional ease-of-use, it is rather fascinating that not only has this problem ever existed, but even worse, that it has not been fixed since iOS 4.2. Someone, please, anywhere in Apple, figure this **** out!

I'm using iPhone SE in 2017 & this basic issue still not fixed by Apple, it is really shocking. Do Apple employees use iPhone or not? Don't they know about this problem?

Extraordinary company & products but this kind of basic issue still not fixed since many years.

Simply disable vibrations for notifications during calls using proximity sensor & engineers can't fix this problem when you have your own hardware & software???

Please help.

Also submitted request in apple suggestion site but no response.

This bug drives me crazy.

Who could think that having something dinging and vibrating in your ear while on a call would be something usefull?

It is really frustrating not to be able to stop such ting ONLY during a call.

Manually turning them OFF gets me in the point of forgetting to enable them back and to miss notifications when not on a call.

REALLY strange option. Please do something about it

Thanks for the suggestion, wjosten, but like I explained, I'm aware of the ability to turn vibrate on and off wholesale, but I find it useful the majority of the time to have it switched on.

It's simply when the phone is stuck to the side of my face that I'd prefer the vibrate function be disabled. There's a proximity sensor on the phone that shuts the screen off when you're on a call. Surely there must be something for shutting the vibrate feature off in the same vein?

I mean, is there anyone out there who finds their iPhone vibrating against their skull while on a call acceptable? In all seriousness, it really is quite jarring.

Cheers,

Darcy

It seems there is no solution to this apart from the workarounds I've listed, so I've filed a feature request with Apple, pasted below.

If anyone feels the same as I do, please consider filing a similar request. You can do so here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

Thanks,

Darcy

"I find the vibrate feature very convenient for times when I am not on a call and I want to be notified of an incoming call, text, e-mail, etc. But when I am using my phone, pressed to my face on a call, I would very much appreciate it if the phone were smart enough, by way of the proximity sensor, to disable the vibrate feature.

As it stands, when I am on a call and I receive a text, for example, the phone vibrates in my ear and against my face in a very jarring fashion. It's not only uncomfortable, it's unnerving.

Currently my two options for avoiding this seem to be to disable the vibrate feature all together, or to remember to toggle the silent switch when making or receiving a call (and then remember to toggle it again when finished). Inconvenient and/or easy to forget.

I can see no reason why anyone would like to have their phone vibrate against the side of their head unexpectedly like this. Please consider allowing the proximity sensor to tell the vibrate feature to turn off when on a call."

It is absolutely absurd that this feature is not available. The phone is already designed to KNOW when it is held to your face (the screen turns off when you hold it to your head to talk), so there is no reason to deal with this incredibly annoying issue. The possibility of having to turn vibrate on and off every time you take a call during the day is ridiculous. This feature better be built into iphone 5.

I came to this post with the same frustration. Your dialogue helped me to troubleshoot and solve the problem - sort of.

iPhone 5 (and probably others)

> Settings > Sounds > New Mail >

**change "Vibration" at top of list to "None"

I don't have a need for my phone to vibrate everytime I receive an email ... so this is a bit of a holistic solution for me.

Good luck and hopefully this tweak helps you too.

I find this really annoying too. I just switched from a Galaxy S2 to an iPhone 5 and I'm considering going back because of this. I can't believe something so simple has been left out of this phone. I can't think why you'd ever want it to vibrate while you have it held to your face, or even just when you're on a call. Makes the vibrate on e-mail almost useless.
