New symbol upper right corner of iPhone 4

their's a icon that looks like a circular arrow with a lock in the middle in the upper right hand corner of the display (next to the battery icon). Any idea what it's for & how to get rid of it?

the display no longer shifts between potrait & landscape view - might be related to that.

iPhone is running OS 4.2.1

It is the portrait lock feature. Double press the home button to bring up the recently used apps bar and swipe to the right. The very first icon before the Ipod controls is the one you want. Press it and your problem will disappear.
