can i control apple tv from my macbook? -- verification needed!

I know there are a lot of threads on this, and they all say no... (I did my due diligence in searching the forum, web, etc.!) But in one thread someone said YES, but didn't explain how!

So... Just for the record... The answer is no?

Thanks!

I appreciate much of what folks have posted here, but there are some points that need to be considered:

Apple doesn't, and never intended, to provide all of the solutions to all users. They create products, yes. They provide development environments for their two ecosystems, yes. They created two non-identical operating systems, yes. But those two OSen are NOT the same thing, much as they may appear to be. The AppleTV is an iOS device (like the iPad, iPod, iPhone) -- we all know that. That environment is NOT the same as the Mac OS.

I'm not thrilled that Apple didn't produce a Remote app for the MacOS, but as others have pointed out, there are developers who have pieces of solutions. I've found nothing amiss with 1keyboard for my typing needs -- it's only missing navigation. Maybe it has features in the pro version I am unaware of, as I'm using the trial now. I like what the developer has done thus far, and hope they continue with a navigation module next. Then again, I've learned that the last thing I want near me while I watch something through AppleTV or listen to the family music itunes machine is a computer -- I spend FAR too much time on one as it is, and prefer to focus solely on one media form at a time. That's a new paradigm for me, but I am finding I like it much.

More importantly, this forum (and most online resources) are largely ignored by Apple. If you want to gain attention, you need to use their feedback forms on this website. Squeaky wheel is really part of their culture. You want to really get attention, go into the store, buy something (AppleTV, highest end MBP you can afford, etc.), take it home -- then take it back to the store for a full return a few days later. Ask to speak to the Store manager -- not just the manager or supervisor on duty -- personally hand the kit back to them with a very civil, very polite, very firm reason why this combo of product is not working for you. Express your disappointment, and ask them if they can recommend an Android solution of hardware and software that would do what you want. Repeat as desired.

I'm not suggesting you unwrap the devices, and certainly not break the factory tape on the boxes -- just a purchase and return. Do that several times if you wish to be an activist. Fussing here will get you absolutely NOWHERE. Only what occurs at the retail end and to a much lesser extent the feedback forms gains any attention from Apple. And even that's iffy based on my experience in trying to contribute to the server OS product line (basically crippled and dumbed down to the 4th grade level ever since its high point with 10.6).

My opinion. YMMV.

Here's another person who found this thread because of wanting to control an AppleTV with my MacBook. I'm happy to have found the 3rd Party "1Keyboard" app through this thread.

It's currently available in the App Store for $4.99, it does what I want and I'm very happy to have found it. The price feels totally reasonable to me. You can get it here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/1keyboard/id766939888?mt=12

This my use case for wanting to control apple tv from the iMac:

Context:

1) we own an iMac , 2 Macbooks, 3 iPads and 2 iPhones in our family, and the Apple TV, which is hooked up to the AV receiver.

2) our music library is in the Cloud (using iTunes Match).

3) we like to listen to music.

Situation before Apple TV:

When one of the family members wants to play music to the HiFi, he uses iTunes on one of the OSX or IOS devices and sends the music to an airport express hooked up to the HiFi.

This is rather confusing one must realise: it is easily forgotten from which OSX or IOS device the music is being streamed.

Situation after Apple TV:

So we purchased an Apple TV, and we agreed to play the music directly from the Apple TV using iTunes Match. This no longer involves any of the iOS or OSX devices and hence all of the confusion.

In addition , we prefer not having to switch on the TV screen and moving to that part of the living room.

It is perfectly possible using an iPad and the Remote App to choose an album or playlist on the Apple TV and start playback of that.

For convenience it would be nice, when sitting behind the iMac to be able to do the same thing: using a remote app , or even better, in iTunes to start playing music via the Apple TV, NOT STREAMING IT from the iMac.

Add me to the wish-list too. I have an Onkyo receiver that I have attached to the Apple TV. The receiver has much better sound than most of my audio equipment and play in multiple rooms. It's my personal wall-of-sound. Plus why leave a TV running in an empty room?

My ideal OSX app would control the Apple TV and provide the same visual features as the IOS Remote app - current track with album art, whats up next list option along with selectors for albums, artist, playlist etc. Of the Apps for OSX, I think that Air Squirrels might have the programming chops to make this happen. Here are screen shots of my iPod touch running in the Reflector Airplay emulator on my Mac Pro.

Yeah there is a real need for this!

I would like this as well. To be clear. I am sitting in my living room, working on my MacBook pro. Apple TV is playing iTunes Radio with the TV off (so its not distracting). I want to be able to change to a different station. Currently I have to get up, turn a huge TV on, then use the Apple, iPad or iPhone remote to change the radio station, turn the TV back off, then press play a couple of time on the Apple TV remote because my TV tells Apple TV to pause when it turns off through the HDMI cable.

What I want to do is bring up and app on my iPad, iPhone, or MacBook Pro that lets me not only control the Apple TV (which I can do through the remote or a bluetooth keyboard), but to also be able to see the Apple TV display on my remote device without having to turn on the TV.

A work around is to use AirPlay and stream the music from my computer to Apple TV. That's ok, but it seems like Apple TV and AirPlay should be bi-directional - any device should be able to display and interact with any other device.
