Charging 2nd generation iPod shuffle with 3rd generation charger

I tried it. Won't work. The only difference is the iPod 2nd generation has the doc whereas my 3rd generation is only the headset plug. I figure both plugs are the same and am befuddled why the iPod shuffle 3rd generation charging plug won't work on my iPod shuffle 2nd generation.

Is it really incompatible?
