My new iMac and external display problem

I just purchased a new iMac 27" and connected my external monitor and can't get the same resolution as I had before. My late 2007 24" iMac used the same external monitor with great resolution and with the new one I can't get it to look right no matter what settings I choose. Why is this happening and how can I fix it? Thanks

What adapter and connection method are you using, Mini DisplayPort to DVI or Mini DisplayPort to VGA?

DVI is Digital and by far the best connection if supported by the display, whereas VGA is analog and does not provide the higher resolutions.

Mini display port to VGA. I have perfect resolution when paired with the old 24" white iMac. When I plug into the new 27" I lose the quality. So it's not the external monitor, it's something to do with the new Mac.

No it's the Mini DisplayPort to VGA connection, try the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter and a DVI cable if the external Monitor supports DVI.

I don't see how the mini display port to VGA could be the issue when the VGA adapter I use with the 24" works just fine. My monitor only has a VGA so you're saying because I bought a new Mac I now need a new adaptor AND a new monitor in order to get the same quality as hat I had before? It just doesn't make sense
