Airport Express and Verizon FIOS router

I am trying to add an Airport Express to my wireless network (Verizon FIOS MI424WR)and have tried using the manual setup. Airport Utility is able to see the AExp but once I finish with a manual setup, upon restarting the AExp it says it cannot find it. Is the problem with the WEP vs. WPA2?

sure, sorry.

I want to use the Airport Express to wireless stream music and would like it to wirelessly join my current network. When I have it connected via ethernet cable, I can stream music via AirTunes but when I attempt to set it up for wireless connection to my network, it doesn't work. I've been searching the blogs and read some things about the express not liking WEP.

Thanks for the clarification.

The trick to getting the AirPort Express to join your network is choosing the correct security setting. Do you know if your FIOS router is using WEP security?

There are two versions of WEP, WEP 128 Bit and WEP 64, which is also known as WEP 40 Bit. You might be able to see how the FIOS router is configured by looking at the label on the back or bottom. Otherwise, you need to get into the setup pages for the router to see these settings.

We can't really go much further until we know exactly what type of security your FIOS router is using. Perhaps your password would provide a clue.

How many characters are there in your current wireless password?

OK, thanks.

Start over with the configuration of the AirPort Express again with a "hard reset". Hold in the reset button on the Express until you see the amber light begin to blink more quickly, keep holding another 4-5 seconds and then release

Open AirPort Utility and configure the Express to "join" your wireless network. When you get to the wireless settings, choose WEP 40 Bit on the Express and enter your 10 character password and confirm

When you click Update, close AirPort Utility as soon as you see the message that the settings have been stored sucessfully. It does no good to keep AirPort Utility open because the Express will "disappear".

Wait 40-45 seconds for the Express to restart and with some luck, you'll see a green light. You should be all set.

I got the exact same problem with the same FiOS wireless router that is using WEP-64 bit, 10 character key. My issue is the the Airport utility's (V5.5.2) Wireless Security does not provide WEP 40 bit as an option. It only lists three options:WEP(Transitional Security Network), WPA/WPA2 person, and WPA2 personal. How do I get the Airport Utility to show WEP 40 as an option?

Thanks

I'm running Airport Utility 5.5.2 and working with an AirPort Express 802.11n. If I configure the Express to "join" a wireless network, I cannot duplicate what you are seeing.

I get the following choices for Wireless Security:

None
WEP 40 Bit
WEP 128 Bit
WEP Transitional Security Network
WPA/WPA2 Personal
WPA2 Personal

Try holding down the option key on your Mac when you click on the Wireless Security setting to see if more choices will be displayed

I am trying to do the same thing - connect an Airport Express to a Verizon FIOS wireless router. I also have a 10 digit WEP key. In the security settings on the AirPort Utility, I see only one choice for WEP, and two for WPA. when I select WEP, and fill in my 10 digit WEP key for the password, I get a message that the password should be exactly 13 digits.

I am running version 5.5.2 for Windows. Just downloaded and installed the utility prior to running it.

It worked for me today two times in a row. Here is the detail.

I am running the Airport Utility on my PC laptop with Windows XP Pro Service pack 3.
I reset the Aiport Express again and the Wireless Security showed following options:
None
WEP 40 bit
WEP 128 bit
WPA/WPA2 personal
WPA personal

I have tried this process many times last week and could not get the WEP 40 bit option to show up. But it worked today. I don't know what has changed but it is working now.
