Q: XSAN Volume best performance?

Hi all.

What would be the best settings to applye to the Vloumes, And XSAN. For maximum read / write.

I have 2 x Promise E-Track subsystem raids 32 TB.
And is gonna use for editing in Prores Proxy, LT and HQ.
average file size would be between 200 mb to 3 GB. But there will also be some files between 3 - 30 GB.

Right now its set up at 3 equal size Lun at 14 TB each, on metadata LUN 2 TB and one Audio LUN 6 TB and 2 global spares.

But the performance is not really great on read, smaller files, and write performance is terrible at all file sizes.

But would people recommend to destroy it, and build 4 x 10 TB LUN, 2 TB METADATA LUN, 4 TB SCRATH, AND 4 Global spares. As Apple / Promise recommend. ?

What about spreath and block size, when working with prores files in size betwen 100 mb and 30 gb. ??

I should also mention that0 im running 15 Nethomes on the SAN volume aswell

Has anybody a good suggestion how to set the volume up, for better performance?

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.6), 1.83 1bg memory, 20" cinema, 30 gb ipod video

Xsan is not a jack of all trades. You are never going to get optimal performance if you need to support everything from Network home folders and small transactions on the same volume you are trying to tune for very large files. You really need to create two SAN volumes or just get some direct attached storage for those network homes. Why the expense and complexity of Xsan for 15 network homes? Just use an HFS volume.

And 3 LUNs... Always go in even numbers of pairs or quads.

I have a old XRAID on 2 GB fiber, i will move the nethomes over there. And then its proberly best to create new storage pool, so i will get 4 indsted og 3 ?

Regarding the LUNs, yes. Even if you follow the Apple templates, you will be requested to build you volume using LUN pairs or quartets depending on the template. General file services will allow a pair, but HD video will suggest four. If you have the luxury, create a volume and test performance. Then break it and create another with a different config. Then run the same tests on it.

Hope this helps. Enjoy the learning process.
