iPad Keynote presenter display

Hi. I have a question about presenter display

In the Keynote 1.3 for iPad help you can read "Attach a video adapter cable to your iPad. The presenter display is activated even if the cable isn’t attached to an external monitor or projector, so that you can set it up in advance of your presentation."

I attach the iPad Dock Connector to VGA Adapter but nothing happens. I don't understand.

Thank you

I am having exactly the same problem. I was so excited to create a 59 slide presentation and looking forward to making my presenter's notes, but if I cannot view the notes when I run the presentation, there is no point. I also have the VGA adapter, and it does not automatically go to presenter display when I plug it into my iPad and hit the play arrow.

Looks like that documentation is incorrect (Please report that to feedback or file a bug!)

* If you have the Component video adapter, the iPad will think there's an external display connected as soon as you plug it in, and you'll be able to see the Presenter Display even if you don't have a second display connected.

* If you have the VGA adapter, however, the iPad will look for an external monitor; if there's not one connected, then it will just ignore the connector.

The reason for this is, the Compnent video adapter just sends the signal and has no way to know if there's a monitor or not, so it assumes there is. VGA, on the other hand, is smart enough to talk back and forth, so it can determine whether a display is plugged in or not.

Do you know what exactly would trigger the VGA adapter to recognize a connection?

I've read somewhere else on here that attaching a VGA cable would help. I don't have one handy right now, but it seems to work if you attach a monitor (only have one with a fixed VGA cable) - the monitor doesn't have to be on.

I believe the monitor needs to be turned on. But if you already have a monitor plugged in, well, that's pretty easy to test!

Guess I wasn't clear: I tested it and the iPad does switch to the presenter view with the monitor plugged in, even when the monitor is off.

I'm wondering now what makes the iPad switch to the presenter view. The presence of a cable? Maybe you could have a small connector plug that goes into the VGA adapter that triggers the switch (instead of having to carry a VGA cable around). No, I'm not good with electronics and soldering 🙂

NIce so when I plug in either a VGA Adapter or Composite AV Cable in to my iPad and have keynote in presentation mode the hyper links do not function, but If I don't have either cable installed they work.. This really is driving me nuts I use a Optoma PKA21 Pico Projector for doing presentations with my iPad . I feel ripped off.. thanks apple once again I have spent a ton of cash on adapters that are suppose to work and they don't.. is it possible to get keynote fixed so it works with external devices??? PLEASE

First question is what version you are using for Keynote. The most recent version I downloaded yesterday solves these problems. Once you open iPad, connect the VGA adapter to the iPad and the other end to the projector. The projector wont receive a signal until you open Keynote. Once you do, you will have the various options, including notes, next slide, etc.
