Fax over ISDN? Possible? If so, how?

Faxing requires a normal telephone landline. Your computer requires a standard telephone modem and connection to a standard telephone wall jack.

IDSN, Integrated Services Digital Network, was used to provide early access to the internet over traditional telephone lines. A precursor to what today is called DSL, Digital Subscriber Line.

Although ISDN uses telephone lines it does not usually provide phone service although phone service is provided over the same lines. Fax hardware and software requires the use of standard telephone lines but connects to those lines using a standard telephone/fax modem such as this product.

A fax machine typically has the modem built-in to the machine and simply needs a telephone cable to connect the machine to a telephone wall jack. It really makes no difference if your telephone lines are separate or shared with the ISDN data service.

Why the **** would you want to fax anything in the first place? Given that you do, there are a number of websites that will do it for you.

And by "standard" and "normal" line he means "analog." You can't fax over digital lines including ISDN because fax expects the carrier to be analog.

Well, you cannot use a G3 fax on ISDN unless you have an analogue card in the PABX. But you could previously purchase G4 fax machines (now you can get G4 fax boards for office copiers) that will connect to basic rate ISDN and send to G4 and G3 faxes. But these days why would you bother??? As has been mentioned there are plenty of fax services available that let you send your documents via email and they will forward your attachment/s to a nominated fax.
