I've got exaclty the same problem. Spent ages trying to burn a new set of CDs and DVDs and only to find that they failed at the verify. I tried using an open source product called 'Burn' and it looked like it worked, yet when I reinserted the disk it said the disk was blank. I tried the disk in another machine and it all worked fine.
Every disk I insert thinks it's blank. I'm running a MacBook pro 15inch 2.53. Mid 2009 OSX 10.6.7
Absolutely gutted. The CD drive is the same
MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-868
I'm guessing that no-one has found a fix to this and apple won't look after it's loyal customers?
Same problem again. However I have some additional information. I have MacBook Pro Mid-2009, which had no problems until I decided to re-install to entire OS and software (in the last 48 hours), I want to have a 'fresh' mac again!! I installed the original OS from the supplied original DVD (OSX v10.5.5), I continued to install all my original applications (iLife'09) and then combination updates. I then continued to install my Snow Leopard update (OSX v10.6) and the next round of updates. At this point things go wrong, I cannot now read ANY discs in my Superdrive - ALL are being recognised as BLANK. I have an original 'working' copy of iWork'09 that I now cannot install (has worked in the past!), the drive will not read my v10.6 update disc and furthermore the system will now not even read the original v10.5 disc..!! This has obviously got to be an update from Apple that has rendered my superdrive useless!!!
Hello guys, similar problem for me! My UJ-868 has apparently crossed arms few days ago and now tells me that EVERY cd I insert is blank/untitled even when it is a PDF manual on disk. I thought it might be a dirty laser lens and I wanted to buy one of those cleaner-cd but also wanted an hint from an Apple-man. Today I went to the store here in Aberdeen and the kid immediately jumped to conclusion the reader must be replaced. The quote is about 120 quid and I am seriously pi....ed because mine is a mid-2008 MBP 15" with no Applecare! The spare reader costs 45 on eBay and I am tempted to replace it myself but B4 going ahead I would like to know if anyone has found a solution for this snag...
Many thanks
It seems we all macbook pro users, we got same problem. it's frustrating I insert cds and the 90% of them can't be read, they all are shown as blank cds. Also I can't burn anything, plus some movies DVD's can't be read also coz the area code. I remember I was able to change the area code, in the past.
I reckon it's all about the updates, since I've been updating my system operation, all the problems started.
if this is an apple website, can't anyone well known about macs can answer the original enquire. It seems that we all are hopeless. I got Snow leaopard and I will get Lion Os soon as it gets in the app store, but why Apple make seems everything easy and then they screw us all with their own updates ? ?
I would buy a new laptop but if problems like this keep happening with Macs I would change back to PC. the Driver lense takes longer to get wasted.
i think the problem is from the format of the cd
i check my old cd and it's work fine ,when i burn the "cd's" i was using vista
later i had problem with my old laptop he cant recognize the cd any more but he can read "DVD"
when i insert the "DVD" on the mac he recognize them as blank disk !!
and when i try any c.d was written in windows 7 he doesnt recognize it at all !!!
I understand this thread is 6 months old, and I apologize if adding a post to such an old thread is against some protocol of Apple forums, but I wanted to know if any folks here had found a fix or at least any clues regarding the MBP superdrive "failure to read disk" problem discussed herein.
I too have a MacBook Pro but older, the 3,1 model, late 2007, running 10.6.8 -- I insert burned DVDs which contain movies and various pic files I archived some time ago (using same superdrive on same MBP I am using right now) and the disk shows up in the finder as a blank DVD. I have tried about 7 or 8 of such burned DVDs and I get same result.
Tomorrow I will take disks into the office and see if work computer recognizes or not, but this is top thread I got when I googled my problem so I thought I'd just ask if anyone had any input.
Thanks.
sounds like you did not name the disc before burnnig it
I appreciate your reply.
I don't think I understand what you mean. Even if I did not "name" the disk (I don't recall one way or another), the finder should still reflect what is on the disk, right? This is how finder has always behaved in the past when I have inserted CDs or DVDs. Is there something I am missing?
Thanks.
My CD/DVD superdrive recognize all CDs or DVDs as blank.
