How do I assign Client ID Names?

I like to have a quick look now and again at who is on my Wireless network. When I look at "DHCP Clients" in the AirPort Utility for my Extreme, I see the list of MAC Addresses - which I have correlated to known devices on a "Stickies" note. That works… but it's pretty lame! Why can't I give a "Client ID" name to each of the devices that I control so that it is instantly apparent on the list when a newcomer is on my WIFI network?

If this can be done, I'd love to learn how!

Thanks,

MacBook MacBook Pro, and iPad, Mac OS X (10.6.6), AirPort Extreme and Express

You can start with your Mac by opening System Preferences and the opening Network. Click on AirPort on the left to highlight it and then click Advanced at the lower right.
Click the TCP/IP tab
Look for the DHCP Client ID area
Type in the name you want. Example, +MacBook Pro Wireless+
Click OK, then click Apply

Open Network back up again and click on Ethernet on the left to to highlight it
Click Advanced at the lower right
Click the TCP/IP tab
Locate the DHCP Client ID area and type in the name you want, +MacBook Pro+, for example
Click OK, then click Apply

Do this for each of your Macs

Your iPhone and iPod will have a similar setup if you poke around on the wireless settings. Not sure about the iPad since I don't have one

You can find a similar setup on most of your AirPort routers by clicking on the device in AirPort Utility and then clicking Manual Setup
Click the Internet icon
Click the TCP/IP tab
Enter the info you want in the DHCP Client ID box

That should get names placed to MAC addresses for most device when you check the DHCP info area.

I am on a MacBook Pro running 10.6.6. In system preferences, I open Network, click on 'Airport' then select the 'Advanced...' button then the TCP/IP tab across the top.
On this page I see;

Configure IPv4: Using DHCP with manual address
IPv4Address: 10.0.1.5
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: 10.0.1.1
Configure IPv6: Automatically
Router:
IPv6 Address:
Prefix Length:

No where do I see a reference to a "DHCP Client ID area". Am I missing it?

If I go to 'AirPort Utility' v5.5.2 and select my AirPort Time Capsule I can select 'Manual Setup' then 'Internet' and the TCP/IP tab I do see 'DHCP Client ID' at the bottom of the page. But this would be for the router itself, not the additional items using it. But I'm willing to admit I'm wrong if I am.

On your MacBook

+Configure IPv4: Using DHCP with manual address+
+IPv4Address: 10.0.1.5+
+Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0+
+Router: 10.0.1.1+
+Configure IPv6: Automatically+
Router:
+IPv6 Address:+
+Prefix Length:+

All correct down the left hand side of the window

Over on the right side of the same window...

I see a button for DHCP Lease
Just below that is DHCP Client ID with a blank space next to it for your entry

OK, I see the break down now. That option is only present if you have selected "Using DHCP" not when you have selected "Using DHCP with manual address" I wonder why?

So since I'm using a manually assigned address I can't name it I guess.

In AirPort Utility it would still be nice to be able to give names to all the wireless devices using its services.

Thanks for the help.

Hi,

I know that it has been a while since last replays but maybe somebody would help me. I've made all the steps and named my MacBook Air as you can see:

User uploaded file

I have Polish language so plenty of texts could be unclear for you 😉 back to the point - I have made everything as you said but still on my router i can see old name "Air-Mateusz" - any advice?

Thanks in advance 🙂
