"Sending message content to server failed" Help!

After weeks of working just fine, iPod touch (4th gen, OS 4.2.1) won't send mail. Keep getting the message "A copy has been placed in your Outbox. Sending message content to server failed." It's a gmail address.

Have deleted the account and re-set it, restarted the iPod, disconnected and re-connected the wifi.

Receiving mail is fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Good evening,
I have the same issue with my wife's iPod 4G running iOS 4.2.1
Until today, everything was working just fine with her gmail account on her iPod.
She can no longer send emails with her Gmail account.
I tried to delete and setup her account again ** the same problem remains.

I have tried to setup MY gmail account on the iPod and it's working.

I also tried to setup her gmail account on my iPhone (from which I have no problem at all to send emails from both my gmail and my me account): I couldn't send the email.

Could it mean that the problem is on Google's side and only with some gmail accounts?

Any help would be very appreciated.

Thank you.

Mathieu

Seems this is most likely a gmail SMTP problem with 3rd party mail clients, including Apple Mail and iPod, iPhone mail.

Just browsed gmail forums and found this:

Hopefully it's one of those issues that the Google Machine will pick up on and will be solved soon.

Fingers crossed, but if anyone has any solutions in the mean time...

I'm a new user to iPhone and got this after the phone had been on continuously for a week. I turned it off and back on again, and one of the three messages in the outbox automatically got sent after start up. Then the problem came back, so I rebooted again. The next two went without issue and I've just sent a test message that went without a problem too. Hopefully it won't come back!
