iMac display issues

Hi,

My 17-inch late 2006 iMac running Mac OS X 10.4.11 has started having some display issues, that is, showing vertical blue lines on the left side of the screen. At the moment this only occurs at the log-in screen or sometimes when waking from sleep.

Is this a hardware or software issue?
Can I do anything to solve it?
Will it get any worse?

I was planning to upgrade to Mac OS 10.6 and add more RAM but if this continues I can't really spend any more money on it.

Any help is really appreciated.

The software on my Mac is 'up to date' according to Software Update.
If it is a software issue would re-installing Tiger or upgrading to Snow Leopard fix it?
I found another discussion (located here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1580232) in which people indicated that it was a hardware issue and even had parts replaced by Apple outside of warranty.
What number should I call to get help from Apple in Australia?

I took my Mac to the Apple Store today, and I'm very pleased to report that Apple recognizes this as a common problem and will be replacing the iMac's display free of charge! This is amazing as the computer is around 4 years old and long out of warranty. The repair was valued at over $900 (Australian). My next PC will definitely be a Mac, thanks Apple!
