Sony EX 3 Log and Transfer Error - ?

I got all excited when our school just bought some Panasonic AG-HMC150s and some Sony EX3s! (We already had some Panasonic HVX200 cameras.) I shot a green-screen scene with all three cameras, to compare image quality, chroma-keying, etc.

But then, I tried to Log and Transfer the clips from each of the three cameras. FCP brought in the HVX200 P2 card clips and the Panasonic AG-HMC150 clips without any problems.

But ... when I tried to Log and Transfer the Sony clips, it said "SonyEX3 contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media."

I had copied files from all three camera onto my hard drive. From the Sony card, I copied the BPAV folder, with all its contents, into a new folder I created on my hard drive. The contents of the BPAV folder include a CLPR folder containing five folders with numbers, a CUEUP.XML file, a MEDIAPRO.XML file, and an empty TAKR folder. Each of the numbered folders in the CLPR folder contains five files, including an MP4 file that is in the range of a hundred megabytes more or less and which seems to be a video file. That MP4 file will not play in my Quicktime Player, which complains "The movie contains invalid data."

Did I do something wrong? Should I have tried to File and Transfer directly from the Sony card, instead of copying everything in the Sony Card to my hard drive?

All these folders and files and formats! When I started in this business, your only choices were: limestone, or granite!

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi -
You need to use the Sony XDCam transfer app which is both a stand alone app and will become a plug in in FCP and appear as an option under the File > Import menu. It will act as the log and transfer software for ingesting footage from an XDCam/Ex camera.

It should be available on the DVD that came with your camera or it available on line.
As far as I know the latest version is 2.12.0.

Hope this helps.

Thanks folks. I finally got to the XDCAM transfer site by using the Chrome browser; for some reason Safari doesn't work. Downloaded the plug-in even though it says for MaxOS10.6 and I have 10.5.8, it still worked. And then when I clicked "Import," some options popped up including XDCAM. It worked!

By the way, the shots from the Sony EX3 at 1080 24P look gorgeous!

I found another web page from Sony:
http://www.sony.ca/xdcamex/software.htm
This lets you download the "Log and Transfer Utility for MAC Version 1.00." I tried it, and it lets you immediately do Log & Transfer for Sony EX3 files.
(As long as you keep the BPAV folder and all its contents. I haven't tested breaking up the BPAV folder yet to see if it can work with just the isolated MP4 video clips.)
