Tesing my DVD drive? Is there a way?

is there a way to test the hardware integrity of the DVD drive on my iMac like you do with verifying a hard drive? Drive has been acting strange (lots of stop/starts ) when using Mac the Ripper.

Use your install disc that came with your Mac and do a Hardware Test (restart the computer and hold down the D key). Suggest you run it from the DVD itself and run through the entire Hardware Test. I'm pretty sure it tests the optical drive and if so, may report something.

Note: ripping a DVD can be quite a mechanical chore on an optical drive.
