Hard disk upgrade authorization question

I'm going to put a new hard drive in my iMac, removing the old hard drive. Should I de-authorize my current computer first, or will iTunes recognize that it is the same computer? In other words, does iTunes authorize the computer, or the hard drive?

It will likely not.

You should deathorize first.

Yes I agree with the previous reply. Every time you change the hard disk you need to first de-authorize the old one and authorize the new one.

I was actually looking for a more solid answer, such as, "iTunes gets the machine specific ID number and uses that" or, "Authorization is stored on the local machine's hard drive and removal will cause you to lose an authorization.

The answers make sense, but "inquiring minds want to know".
