Sudden Weak WiFi signal on 3Gs

Over the last month or so I've experienced a big drop-off in my 3Gs's ability to latch-on to my local home WiFi signal. I've not recently upgraded, or changed settings on the phone. An example; my BT Home Hub router sits in my office and casts a strong signal throughout my timber-frame house, (and I know the signal's still fine because my 3-yr-old Macbook, which I use anywhere and everywhere, and spanking new iMac display full WiFi bars and the speed is excellent.) I normally access the web via my iPhone from my living-room, which is no more than 20 Yards from the router, and up until a month or so ago, enjoyed a full reception on the iPhone also, but now nothing. Zilch. (There is one small corner where I can sometimes pick up one bar.)
I'm composing this message on the iMac, which displays the full WiFi signal, with my iPhone propped up next to it and displaying zero WiFi reception. We are about eight yards away from the router.
(I realise this topic is closely linked to others already posted, but it's something that Apple should really be responding to; they obviously have people who keep an eye on forums like these to monitor feedback about their products, and connectivity issues seem to be a bit of a hot potato at the moment.)
My hunch is that the iPhone's capability to receive a WiFi signal has somehow become compromised, being as all other devices - and Apple devices at that - work fine.
Can somebody help.
Thx.

Hi, Just wanted to add some input on what worked for me when my iphone started experiencing loss of wifi connection.

My 3gs wasnt picking up any connection at all even when standing right next to the router. I started tinkering around with some settings. I turned the "Airplane Mode" slider to ON and then back OFF again and suddenly my wifi started working again. I have no idea why or how this worked but just thought I'd share what worked for me.

I cured my 3gs "battery munching" problem - but the wifi only works when right next to my router. I have another 3gs the same on 5.0.1 that works fine - picks up my wifi and the neighbours no probs. I have replaced the antenna in the phone - done resets / udf resets turned on and off various things - same wifi issue! The bluetooth is working fine but makes no difference to poor wifi if BT is on or off. Connection in phone is OK. I can't revert to earlier software as I have no saved blobs (****!) ......... any other ideas guys?

Hi All,

Some of you may still have this issue, so please see what I have found out minutes ago.

I also had the same Wifi problems for weeks and was just about to believe that the only solution is to buy a new antenna...well, it might solve the problem (and I am sure it does) however there is an other solution which you should try before making any investments on apple products or accessories.

In the past couple of weeks I've tried everything, read all forums, changed settings, reset then restored my iphone 3GS and nothing happened.

Today, all I did was removing the sim card. I stung a paperclip into that little hole and took the sim out, switched the phone off, put the thing back in and restarted the phone and tadamm: Le iphone 3GS has stronger Wifi sign then ever...(at least much stronger than it had in the past few weeks).

I think in case you exchange your antennas, you also do these basic steps, as you need to remove your SIM card before you open the phone.

Try this out, it is simple, but after 4 weeks of struggling with a useless phone, I have Wifi again after just a simple action....:-)

And now an official letter to whom it may concern at Apple:

Dear Apple, it's time for you to send me my I-phone repair expert certificate together with an offer letter, since it is not the first time your so called experts cannot do anything and I have fixed this sh*t on my own. And I am a woman. Not an engineer.

I've just tried removing and re-inserting the sim card, but that had no effect. Will check connector 6 tonight and if that doesn't work will get a new antenna and try that.

I'm running iOS 5.0 (9A334) with modem firmware (baseband) 05.11.07 which is the original baseband on iOS 3.1.2, so can catagorically say that this is not a firmware issue. It's either software (driver) or hardware (which somehow could have been caused by the software, given the number of people that this has happened to).

I didn't start getting problems until upgrading to iOS 5, which were mainly GPS based, but over the last couple of weeks my wifi has gone from intermittent to useless. Shame, as everything else is better under iOS 5 that ever was when using iOS 4.

--UPDATE--

I have checked connector 6 and it was firmly attached. I disconnected it, blew away any dust and re-connected it. I seemed to have better WiFi briefly but it was very shortly back to how it was before.

I stumbled across this http://www.snackyserve.com/iphone_3g_wifi_fixed/index.html which suggests that the problem is related to overheating and gradual de-fluxing of the WiFi IC. I can believe that, it seems like a plausable reason to me.

I'm going to try the antenna replacement first as I don't really want to screw up my logic board, however I may give this a go when I get my iPhone 5 (in June/July please Apple)

Hey eagle,

The only solution is to change the wifi antenna. Don't puzzle your head and i am telling this to anybody in this discussion, just replace the wifi antenna.

don't be afraid to open your iphone. There are a lot of "how to" tutorials in youtube or ifixit.com

My iphone (when i purchased it) had a cost of around 650 euros. 10-15 euros after 3 years to repair my iphone is nothing. But now i have my precious back again for another 3 years (i guess).

Yep, changing the WiFi antenna did it for me. My iPhone's back to normal for only £4.99 (UK people google parts4ipods), brilliant 😁 I did notice that the new antenna had a more positive click when connecting it to the logic board too. Hopefully I'll also see improvements in my GPS too now.

There was a ton of dust in my phone, my guess it creeps in through the silent/loud switch, as it looks pretty open around it and there was more dust in that area of the phone. That switch certainly works better now I've cleaned it out too.

To all u guys out the witnh iphone problems in more ways than one, i was a iphone avocate from the very first one all the way up to iphone 4, and even with all the headaches with software problems and updates, and that rediculous itunes i loved my iphone, But like every other person i eventually got fed up and started looking elseware for my phone needs and to my supprise while iphone is still the best (for now) the rest of the world is catching up,i did alot of research and comparing before i made a decision and bought a Widows 7.5 mango, phone from HTC and never looked back, i absolutely love it, i t gives me everything i need without even a hicup, sure they dont have hundreads of thousands of apps, but how many apps can u really use on a phone, pc comnection is great, sky drive is simple and user friendly, not to mention u get more gbs of free space and cheaper rates than the icloud, all i'm saying is take a look around, theres alot out there to meet everyone's needs that does'nt have and apple sticker on it, apple's prices are getting rediculous, service and support is lousy and and there software arn't as reliable as it used to be, sorry to say but i've had enough, cause its always something.
