Q: Convert analog video with ADVC-110 and FCP

I just bougth ADVC-110 to convert "easily" analog videos to digital ones on my Mac :-/ I work with FCP6.0.6 and Mac OS 10.6.6 on an iMac (2Ghz intel Core Duo).
I try to "Log and Capture" with FCP. I get the screen with VRT OK. I hit "Capture now" and I get a black screen, saying "Waiting for Timecode". My videorecorder (a Panasonic NV-SD300) is connected tot the ADVC-110 with the 3 cables (white-red-yellow). The ADVC-110 is connected with a 6-pin-cable to my Mac. Firewire works OK, I see ADVC-110 in the systemprofiler.
Hope someone can help me!!!

i-Mac, Mac OS X (10.6.6), FCP 6.0.6

Th ADVC-110 appears in the Systemprofiler, Firewirebus (ADVC-110:
    Fabrikant: Canopus
    Model: 0x0
    GUID: 0x20110115026FAB
    Maximumsnelheid: Maximaal 400 Mb/sec
    Verbindingssnelheid: Maximaal 400 Mb/sec
    Subeenheden:
    ADVC-110 Unit:
    Softwareversie eenheid: 0x10001
    Specificatiecode eenheid: 0xA02D

I try to import in iMovie ... Import ... Nothing happens, just a bleu screen, no fault-messages, camera says: ADVC-110; so iMovie recognizes the converter.

Try the ADVC-110 on another Mac - So that it is OK

When I burnde the A/D-chip in my Cameras (same as in A/D-box) I still could control it
to wind/re-wind/play - BUT only a blue screen.

    Yours Bengt W

Sorry, I noticed to late that the Fireware-specifications were in Dutch. I translated them below:
Th ADVC-110 appears in the Systemprofiler, Firewirebus (ADVC-110:
    Maker: Canopus
    Model: 0x0
    GUID: 0x20110115026FAB
    Maximumspeed: Maximaal 400 Mb/sec
    Connectionspeed: Maximaal 400 Mb/sec
    Subunits:
    ADVC-110 Unit:
    Softwareversion unit: 0x10001
    Specificationcode unit: 0xA02D

I try to import in iMovie ... Import ... Nothing happens, just a bleu screen, no fault-messages, camera says: ADVC-110; so iMovie recognizes the converter.

I tried it on an other laptop ... Finally, with a different scart-cable (with an in- and outbutton on the scart-side and yellow, white and rouge cable on the other side) it went ok. I tried it again on my own computer, with the same scart-cable. I see video ... but in very bad condition ... It's kind of split in two only in black and white and very shaky ... I played the video on TV, with the same videorecorder and it looks ok. It's getting a little bit frustrated :-((

A far fetched thought - but

Can it be so that the VCR tape is in NTSC and You/we are in PAL region ?

I can playback NTSC to TV (Bl/W) - connecting a VCR that can handle NTSC in between
and I get color on TV.

    Just a thought - Bengt W

I realize this conversation is now 4 years old, but it is still the most comprehensive answer to the question coming up early in searches, currently. And there are some of us still using the old technology.

There are 2 things nobody mentioned to @krisseby which could have saved her a lot of trouble.

    1. Firewire ports are sometimes ineffective, without being totally ineffective. In particular it is possible for your computer to recognize that the Canopus ADVC-110 is plugged into a port, yet still not process the video signal through it. I noticed this on my G5, and was able to resolve the same symptoms described here by just using a different firewire port.

    2. The tiny switches on the bottom of the Canopus ADVC-110 definitely need to be properly set and there is something sort of counterintuitive about the design: the switches can be set to "OFF" or "ON" but these states in no way reflect the function. In particular, switch 1 should be "OFF" if you are importing an NTSC signal and "ON" if you are importing a PAL signal. Switch 3, when "OFF" maintains audio synch when capturing and turning it "ON" will lose this important feature. Switch 6, when "OFF" allows you to select analog/digital with the button on the top-front, whereas if it is "ON" the device must automatically detect the signal, which it sometimes does incorrectly. For most purposes, all the rest of the switches should be in the "OFF" position, but follow the chart on the bottom of the device to see if you need to modify this.
