Emailing multiple pictures at a time

(warning: not much of a question, just a story)

I have had my iPad for many months now and whenever I was at my parents house, it would disappear into the hands of my mom or dad for the entire day until the battery was dead or I was leaving (even me leaving didn't pry them away sometimes forcing me to leave it behind) but I am super glad they enjoyed it so much. That made it easy for me to think of something for my mom for her birthday... her very own iPad!

Of course, I have been coaching her right along on all the ins and outs but the other day I received an email from her while she was on a trip and it contained multiple photos. I had never figured out how to send multiple photos in one email from an ipad so I was blown away! I guess moral of the story, the student has become the teacher... she showed me how she did it and I continue to help her update her apps.

Are you going to leave us hanging?

Since you have found something useful that you did not know how to do, perhaps you would post it so others may be enlightened, as you were?

haha, TRUE! I figured if my mom figured it out, I was one of the last to know but I would love to share. When you are viewing all photos or an album or something other than one photo at a time, you will see the button in the top right corner of the screen with the arrow coming out of a box (the same button you would use to email one photo when you are viewing one at a time). Tap that and then start selecting the photos you want to email. When you have selected the ones you want to email, there are 4 buttons on the left top corner that allow you to email, copy, print (if you have ios 4.2.2) or delete the selected photos.

Pretty easy! I am embarrassed I didn't figure it out sooner but very useful never the less.

You can do it in a limited sort of a way in 4.2.1 —

1. In Photos, select an album or event or whatever, then
2. Tap the Share button, appearance of task bar will change
3. Tap a photo to mail, 3 new buttons appear, one being Email.
4. Tap additional photos to select and send.

+You can only select 5 images to send; select a 6th and Email will go dead. Videos are apparently limited to just one.+

5. Tap the email button and message is composed for sending.

I think there are a few apps that will let you bundle more pics together for emailing but, being one of those who think it stupid to email huge attachments of any sort, haven't really looked into it.

WARNING - oncoming rant
being one of those who think it stupid to email huge attachments

I always convert my photos (drop them down at to ~100kB-200kB at most) before emailing them.
That's one of the big problems with digital cameras these days.
Everyone thinks "I need to have as many pixels as possible".
Probably 80% of people do not need more than a 6MP camera (and most would do fine with 3MP), yet there are 14MP consumer grade cameras around.
Grandma doesn't know any better and emails humongous pix to everyone.
And with more/most people having broadband, they don't see any problems.
I had 28k dialup until 5 years ago. Whenever I got pix from someone, I simply deleted the email because I wasn't going to download a dozen 3MB photos (half of which were a shot of someone's foot or elbow)

... and I never even thought of C&P as a way to send more pics.

I've got a few aspects of this on my iPad Feedback list, though (I save them up and do 15-20 at a time on the iMac): 1) the limit of 5 seems arbitrarily low, as that usually only adds up to a bit over 2 MB before encoding and usually somewhere under 3 when sent, and 2) I'd like to see the option, in either Mail or Photos, of reducing the size even more.

I usually use FileStrom to resize the image or to crop it down. And it has a fast save option that compresses the photo decently. There not reason to send megapixel photos to grandma if she is only going to view the photo on a computer. Or to send to FaceBook....

Be nice if you could do this in the photo app...

I think the nicest thing about emailing the photos from the photo app instead of copy and paste is that the recipient doesn't have to download the pics when they receive it. I realize pics still have to be downloaded from the server and all that jazz but when you open the email, you see all the pics in a row already opened.

I think 5 is just right. Like others have said, I don't want to spend all my time downloading pics from someone but I don't want to be stuck sending 5 emails to get 5 photos out.

I guess the whole point is that the ipad is a wonderful machine!

Warning to anyone using Imap Gmail. If you exceed the file size limit, you may get a mess, with never ending repeat bouncing back and forth, using a tremendous amount of bandwidth and freezing your email. I don't think there is a limit on number of photos from Imac, just on the file size. Many threads on the Imac email topic on this--don't know how applicable to Ipad alone.
