Macbook won't turn on, weird beeping noise, won't charge

15 inch Macbook Pro bought last summer, latest OS, no modifications

I let my laptop run out of its battery as I was skyping with a friend, so I went to get it charged. Normally, if it ever ran completely out of its battery life, it would just go to sleep and I would be able to resume what I was doing a minute or two after I plugged it back in. This time, however, when I plug it in, it makes a faint beeping noise from the mouse pad area and won't charge. I left it plugged in for 20 minutes, but one led on the bar on the left side of the laptop, which indicates the battery charge, was still blinking. The beeping noise is continuous and is quite similar to the double beep you get when you power up the laptop, except it's at a constant rate of one a second and seems to be cut off.

edit: The flashing light at the front is synchronized to the beeping.

Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys.

I had the same issue as the original poster. Ran out of battery and got continuous flashing and beeping without it turning on. First I opened up the bottom to take out the battery - but was stopped by a) the warning not to do so and b) the tri-tip screw heads.

Next I tried resetting the SMC as the previous poster linked to. It didn't work as advertised. What eventually worked was : with the unit plugged into power, hold the power button for 10 seconds. While still holding it, press the left hand shift, control, and option keys for 10 seconds. Let go of those three keys while still holding the power button for 10 more seconds.

This worked for me but obviously your mileage may vary. The main point is to try releasing the buttons at different times, even though the above article on SMC specifically says otherwise.

HI Deniskk,

Welcome to the forums. I'm sorry to hear your having issues with your computer.

So if I understand you, your computer beeps, and to the timing of the beeps the sleep light flashes. The beeping, being a clear beep and not the apple startup chim. I think you might find this article by apple relevant to your issue. Power On Self-Test Beep Definition - Part 2. Did you recently change and or upgrade your ram?

If you haven't recently changed your ram, and your computer is still warranty you probable want to take it into a Apple Authorized Service Center or a Genius Bar.

I had the same problem, as I installed a new battery...I did what 'bschellenberg' did and it worked like a charm, but ten minutes in using it, I was trying to find out how to configure the battery, then It just messed up! my screen had lines on it, dodgy sounds coming out, very unhealthy! and just went dead. So I disconnected the battery and again did what bschellenberg did, it booted up like it did, (you can hear the fans) but then goes straight back on to the beeping! Help please!!!!! :(
