iPhone 3G slow 4.2.1

So, having rendered the 3G useless for anyone using 4.x, ignored the fact that there is a serious problem, I read that Apple are now abandoning 3G users altogether with the release of 4.3.

Good work Apple, well done.

I know this is an older thread but just couldnt help myself 😎

Having myself been a quality/prduct manager for many years I have found it of paramount importance to encourage all customers to complain regardless of how small the complaint may be.

Its a very simple (and obvious) method of a supplier recieving positive feedback on thier product and/or service.

Without this feedback via a complaint there would be no mechanism for improvement. Designers, developers, manufactures, service suppliers all improve thier business by this method. If they dont, they fail.

Look at Microsofts enormous campaigne based around Windows 7 being what the customer wants. This is not always based on questionaires but extensively on complaints, be them in Forums such as this, standardized complaint/feedback forms or just plain old word of mouth.

If we all shut up and not say anything then suppliers would be providing us a product which would benifit them only....not the customer.

I am a 3g user and am not happy about it with 4.2.1. I respect all those people who have the time and the need to post complaints about a product that is not as good as it could be. Maybe we would not have 4.2.1 installed if Apple had all this feedback prior. Who knows?

I fully support all the complaints/feedback that have contributed to improving our purchased products such as the Apple iPhone 3g and installed 4.2.1.

I would hate to think they make the same mistake with the iPhone 4 or 5 or 6.

Footnote : Complaining is only good for improvement of product and/or service.

I can understand them not fixing this problem but the comlaint process will make them more vigilant in preventing a re-occurrance of this issue in later products.

If I thought it was a problem that was to persist in later iPhone versions then I would seriously consider a move to another phone.

Keep complaining. they do listen even if you dont see immediate changes. They are not total fools to ignore complaints.

This posting is old and not sure if this will help anything but I would like to add myself to the list of people that will no longer be purchasing Apple products.

My 3G phone is only a lightly used 2 years old phone (still another full year on contract) - worked absolutely perfectly until the day I upgraded to 4.2.1 (the first time I upgraded, which I wasn't going to even do and now I regret).

So now I have a 1 year contract left on a phone that I can hardly use anymore - nothing works on my phone anymore, GPS/maps -forget it, texting slow, internet - nope, and even my camera freezes and crashes my phone.

I guess I am just wondering why Apple has not fixed this yet? Why are they willing to lose so many life long customers? I don't want a new phone and if they aren't willing to provide a fix for this can't they at least let users downgrade to the old system that worked? ?

Way to waste resources and encourage consumerism all in the name of profit... I have one more year on my contract and if this isn't fixed by then, goodbye Apple, loved you while it lasted.

Thanks for all your comments, however I am not understanding why if 4.2.1 is not compatable with iphone 3G why is itunes suggesting if you have issues of any kind that you need to upgrade your software to the latest version. And at no point do they suggest going back to an older version. I had itunes on automatic upgrade and therefore have ended up with the problems discribed. But every where I have looked itunes state to fix issues upgrade to the latest version.

cant help but complain on this issue as well. iphone3G is now useless for the most part. i had 4.2.1 completely redone. no sync or restore. did everything manually. still didnt work. i wound lost for a good while as well since the Maps apps was so slow and showing the wrong location. a once reliable and beloved smartphone is now a nightmare.

if Apple actually cared about its iphone3G customers, then theyd release an iOS 4.3 or iOS 5 lightweight version for the iPhone3G. where one would say not have Notification Center, but can have iMessages..and iCloud.. those are not resource intensive apps. and to have the ability to install the apps out there that demand 4.3 or higher and can run just fine on the iphone3G. or even the original iPhone. which i still cant process how they just knocked that one out. the 1st Gen iPhone has the SAME hardware as the iPhone3G. all it lacks is the 3G modem and the GPS. but other than that its identical in system specs.

people are installing Whited00r, an optimized version iOS 3.1.3. which is very speedy but its still iOS3. so you still cant install the majority of apps from the AppStore. **** ive even had to go and get apps for free from other sources, because i want to use an app but Apple wont let me install it. so they lost my money there. so i gotta get a version that ran just fine before from other sources that are probably illegal but what other choice do i have?

why cant this be done? itd make a lot of people very satisfied and continue to have faith and brand loyalty to Apple. instead they are just ******* people off and losing their business.

when Redd00r (optimized ios4.2.1 firmware) gets released thatll just prove that Apple could very easily have made a speed optimized ios 4 release for iPhone3G. if one guy can make all these little under the hood improvements to the firmware..then why cant Apple (who has an entire professional team at their disposal)?

The problem with introducing a lite version of 4.2.1 is not many of us 3G owners need it. Many are still on, or have rolled back to 3.1.3. The rest are on 4.2.1 and not having problems.

Just last month I upgraded to 4.2.1 from 3.1.3. I did a restore, set up as a new phone and shut down spotlight. Other than a lag when opening Settings, there is no difference in speed anywhere. But I can now use the same app set that's in my wife's 4S. Is there a speed difference between the phones, yes? If there a functional difference, no?

I was trying to upgrade my iphone 3G to OS 4.2 from iOS 4.0. However, it would not simply upgrade and asked me to restore the factory settings. When i restored to the same, it displays a message saying that the SIM is not supported and is asking me to use the SIM i was originally issued.

I bought my iphone in US in 2008. Since then i have relocated to India and no longer have the original sim of AT&T.

My phone is no longer usable as it only seems to display the iTunes Connect, icon on the screen.

Please help.

not many? i beg to differ. 3.1.3 has a major issue in that you cant update your apps or use the newer ones. 4.2.1 is beyond slow for the majority of users. no one wants to have to wait several minutes to get an app going when ordinarily itd only take seconds.

the major cause for this problem is not the apps themselves but the OS.

there is a functional difference because the app on the older iphone is unstable and could crash at any moment because the OS is using up resources. not to mention youd still be stuck because updates to apps now require 4.3 or 5.0 , so youd still not get full functionality.

i had to jailbreak my iphone3G and do several configurations just to get the iphone to feel responsive. and a lot of it was disabling the visual effects like shadows, the rotating effect on the media player, launch effect, etc. getting rid of those makes a drastic difference in performance.

not saying iphone and iphone3G owners need multi tasking and the fancy bells and whistles of the latest OS. but to have compatibility is one thing they shouldnt be locked out of.

i know many people who are new to iphone and they assume off the bat that they will be able to have this fancy device for a good 5 years before having to upgrade to another. which we all know isnt the case because you lose software support after a couple years or so.

if my iphone3G wasnt completely crippled from 4.2.1 , id never have bothered to buy an iphone4. because itd be working as good as it did in the beginning. but even then id still be kicked to the curb for not being able to go to 4.3 and onto 5.0

even if limited on features i'd be a very happy iphone owner knowing that the money i invested on the device wasnt going to become obsolete before the 2 year contract ended.
