It was inevitable that it would reach the end. Since iOS 4.3 is in Beta we will have to see what happens when it is released to the general public.

As far as iOS 4.3 goes from what I have heard on Google it adds more airplay features which were never supported for the iPhone 3G anyways so this upgrade would be moot as the functions it is apparently adding not being supported in the first place. Of course speculating is not supported here so we will just have to wait but if the end doesn't come now for supported iOS upgrades on the iPhone 3G one would expect it to end this summer when iOS 5 may (or may not) come out.

I would wait and see for how long Google continues to support Nexus One. When Android 2.3 Gingerbread eventually lands on it as promised, N1 would have gone through 3 major OS releases, similar to the original iPhone and now our beloved 3G. Only difference, is Android development is accelerated so the life cycle of the device is considerable shorter. It will be interesting if Google continues to support N1 after that, though I have my doubts.
