Have you had any luck with this? I think I'm experiancing the same issue you were having, although my problems where exasperated after updating to 10.6.7.

Other than that: a double fault, always backtraced on com.apple.iokit.IOStorageFamily(1.6.2) and almost always related to WindowServer (I am also posting a recent panic log bellow for cross-referencing).

I too have a macbook pro, but an earlier model (June 2009) that was nonetheless bought with Snow leopard Preinstalled. There is no trace of vmware on my system, but I have used Parallels Desktop (which is now completely gone) and virtualbox which was (like you with vmware) hard to do without but I have only now removed as part of an effort to trace the problem.

I am not sure if this is important but in my panic logs the address following the backtrace to com.apple.iokit.IOStorageFamily is always the same: @0xffffff7f80ee7000->0xffffff7f80f00fff

was this the case for you as well?

Has the 10.6.7 fixed this for you? Because if it has maybe there is something wrong with how these updates come to be applied on our machines, rather than a quirk with a specific update as such.

I am guessing by your kernel version that you are, like me, booting Snow Leopard with the 64bit kernel. Perhaps this is the default with the new macbook pros, but have you tried booting with the 32bit kernel? I am only saying this because when I first got the 10.6.7 update it reset my boot settings back to 32bit without me realising for a week or so, and during that period I hadn't experienced a single panic. The panics started when I found out and got it to boot with a 64bit kernel again. If you are happy with a workarround (rather than a real solution) you might want to give this a try.

Same problem here. I have iMac MB419 and panics happens increasingly. But sometimes BSD process name corresponding to current thread is "WindowServer", sometimes "Google Chrome Ne". Have no idea what's happens 😟

WindowServer just means video-related. Are you also running VirtualBox and/or VMWare?

My experience confirms etresoft's point. These panics were very ofteen related to visual functions such as dock activity, spaces transitions, expose etc. Also it seems, that with virtualbox (v4.04) gone (three days now) the panics stopped no matter how hard I tried to force one.

Don't quote me on this, but I read somewhere that com.apple.iokit.IOStorageFamily deals with external storage/usb drivers. This makes Virtualbox (or indeed Vmware) suspect in the sense that they implement such devices by bridging virtual with real hardware. I also wonder if for similar reasons the Paragon NTFS driver v8 (which I've also removed three days ago) is a possible cause; to be fair, it was never in use when panics occured, whereas virtualbox was running all the time and remains my key suspect.

Now that I have a stable system, I shall start adding possible culprits, if/when I reach any definite conclusions I shall report here!

iStyx, if it turns out your panics originate from software you've added, and this is software you need to use, and you are running the 64bit kernel, then a possible workaround might be to boot OS-X with the 32bit kernel (hold 3 and 2 down while turning on the computer). This shouldn't affect the performance of your machine and you might find it to be more stable this way.

update: after a week or so without VirtualBox, and with all other third party kernel extensions back, my com.apple.iokit.IOStorageFamily kernel panics seem to be gone for good. I feel obliged to add that this software is very good and worked fine for me for many months, so I am taking this to be a temporary bug which hopefully will be resolved with future versions of VirtualBox or OS X.

Thanks for your answers, but I think I had solved this problem for me.

As I told before, my panics appeared while using Google Chrome usually. As you know, Google Chrome uses two Flash plugins, the first one from system and the second one from it's bundle. After I turned off system Flash plugin in Google Chrome's settings my panics were disappear at all. Seems like voodoo, but it works for me 🙂
