If you had mobileme and had find my iphone activated BEFORE it was lost AND
the iphone is on AND
it has not been restored AND
the SIM card is still in it,
then you could track it.

There may be other apps as well, but they would have to be installed and active before the iphone was lost.

If the customer is paying so much to get the iphone ... SHOULDN'T there be a tracking device installed into this expensive technology to locate it? These phones are really expensive and they should have a chip inside them from the start. Why do we have to DOWNLOAD applications to save our phones? And the really silly thing is, if we DON'T download the application AND we lose our phone ... we're screwed??? Heh. Its not like we're downloading games here ... we LOST the phone!!!!

By that logic, there should be tracking chips in laptops, desktops, tv's, cars.... heck, anything over a couple hundred bucks.

Are you seriously that psychotic that you believe this is a reasonable and realistic solution?

By your logic, you can drop your car insurance. Then when it gets stolen you simply call Toyota, Honda, Ford, etc and demand they track your car because it's expensive and should have a tracking device installed. With the exception of GM, NO car company does this.

Sorry, but you seriously need your head examined.

OK, i did not know that mobileme find my iphone even existed until the day after my phone was stolen. I have reported this genuine theft to authorities and am broken hearted as I love my iphone 4 ALOT. I was not reckless at all. I just wanted to know if is still possible to track. I worked hard to afford this luxury item. I dont have alot. I cannot afford another one, but am angry that someone has stolen my property. I am desperate to either track or shut it down as I have alot of information and it accesses my work and home emails.

There is a tracking device built in. You don't have to download anything, you just have to activate it by setting up the FREE MobileMe find my iPhone service. The app is only used to display the location of, lock, notify or wipe a lost/stolen device. If you have only one iOS device, having the app on it serves no purpose. If you have activated Find my iPhone, you can log in to me.com on the web and track the location of the device.

Even if you have the free MobileMe and find my device installed there is a slim chance you will get your phone back if it is lost/stolen. Two friends have had their phones taken recently, both had the find my device app installed with MobileMe and neither was able to recover their phones. Who ever took their phones turned them off so quickly that each of them couldn't be tracked, locked, or wiped within minutes of being taken. They both ended up buying new iPhones and have learned their lesson. So why doesn't Apple make the power button password protected if the passcode is turned on. Then in the event someone does take your iPhone or iPad they won't be able to power it off without the proper passcode. Thus, the device becomes a hot potato that they won't want to hold onto very long and it would have a better chance of getting back to the rightful owner. To loose or have ones phone stolen can be a valuable lesson, but a better deterrent to out right thievery is the issue here. I would like to see Apple make a superior product that everyone ownes based on the length Apple goes to to service the customers loyal to it.

I don't see how that isn't a solution. It is simple and easy to do and yet I think most stolen devices are from opturinist that are most likely not carrying aluminum foil around with them just in case they spot an iPhone for the taking. But for the normal snatch and grab situation when someone leaves their device unprotected for a moment and it is taken, one would think twice if they could not turn it off and knew it could possibly be tracked. This small tweak to any of Apples devices doesn't cost them anymore than an update patch and would make their products more valuable to an end-user rather than a common thief.
