Kernel panic in 10.6.6

Hi all,

My girlfriend got a MacBook over Xmas, specs as follows:

MacBook
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz 3MB L2
2GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB
1280 x 800

Everything had been working fine for weeks. Then recently she upgraded to 10.6.6 and the very next day she got her first Kernel Panic.

It happened pretty much immediately after opening the 'Book to wake it from sleep. The only app open at the time was Safari with a couple of tabs.

There are only a handful of other apps installed on the system:

1password
Dropbox
Microsoft Office

All legitimate, of course.

My girlfriend is not much a of a tinkerer - unlike me! - so I don't think she would've played around with any esoteric settings or anything.

I'll attach the Panic logs at the bottom of this message. Please let me know if there are any other details that would be useful.

I'd really appreciate any help or advice on tracking down the cause of this Panic on such a "fresh" system. The proximity of the Panic to the 10.6.6 upgrade seems more than a little suspicious to me, but I might be wrong...

Many thanks!

erpman.

My girlfriend had her second Kernel Panic today. 😟

This time she'd noticed before opening the MacBook to wake it up that the power light was already on constantly and had stopped pulsing, as if it had already woken up before being opened.

When she opened the case nothing happened, the screen stayed blank and pressing keys or touching the touchpad did not wake it up either. She also tried closing and re-opening the case a couple of times, but that also did not help.

As a last resort she turned off the MacBook and turned it back on, and after it had restarted it showed a warning that it had not been shut down properly, and in the report it had details of a Kernel Panic.

The only application my girlfriend remembers having open whilst sleeping the MacBook was again Safari.

Someting else that ocured to me since my initial post is that we're having to run Safari in 32-bit mode for compatibility with the older version of 1password that's installed.

Anyway, it's a long-shot, but we're going to move over to Firefox for a bit to see if that makes any difference and to just remove it from the equation.

I'll attach the latest Kernel Panic log to the end of this message.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated!

Many thanks,

erpman.

I have seen 5 panics since upgrading to 10.6.6. Four were due to CIJScanner from my Fujitsu ScanSnap software. The other was from SLVoice in OpenSim. All happened during when the Mac Pro (version 1) would normally sleep. Oddly, the other symptom is that I never see my monitors sleep anymore. I have been running this system continuously for four years without any such issues and running the same software. Whatever the bugs in various pieces of software it is not acceptable to Kernel panic running user level software. Especially software that had no such issues on the machine prior to 10.6.6. What is being done to patch this OS version?

Agreed, but when you're dealing with device drivers, you no longer have "user level software".

By the way, are you sure that "CIJScanner" belongs to your Fujitsu scanner? I have a Fujitsu ScanSnap scanner and all I can find related to that name is the file /Library/Image Capture/Support/LegacyDeviceDiscoveryHelpers/CIJScannerRegister.app, which is a Canon file.

Especially software that had no such issues on the machine prior to 10.6.6. What is being done to patch this OS version?

If third-party software stops working when an OS is updated, it's usually the third-party software that has to be patched.

Apr 13, 2011 7:25 AM in response to William-Boyd-Jr

I have the same problem with CIJScannerRegister on Mac OS X 10.6.7. I renamed the application CIJScannerRegister.app to CIJScannerRegister.app.back in the directory /Library/Image Capture/Support/LegacyDeviceDiscoveryHelpers to see if that helps. If the system cannot find the application, it cannot run it and therefore it should not crash the system. That's my assumption.

I suspect it is this:

Image Capture

Version 6.0.1 (428)

Copyright © 2000–2009 Apple Inc.

All rights reserved.

The process "CIJScannerRegist" goes away when I manually quit Image Capture.

Here is the pattern to reproduce the issue on 10.6.8, for me:

- Wake up the Brother MFC-640CW multifunction scanner

- Command-space and type Image Capture to launch Apple's utility

OR

- /Applications/Image Capture.app

Screen reads "No scanner or camera selected"

- in the left column, next to Shared, click the triangle to expand the list

- select Brother MFC-640CW (or yours?)

- do a scan

- leave Image Capture and the scanner alone

- the scanner sleeps

- kernel panic occurs

- hard reboot

(Workaround: If I quit Image Capture before the scanner sleeps, no kernel panic occurs.)

I thought that I was saving time and frustration by using Apple's generic utility, instead of the suite of old proprietary tools from Brother. It turns out that the scanner and Apple software are incompatible. Perhaps the Brother scanner is "ill-behaved" by sleeping when Image Scanner is not expecting. However...

*** In my opinion, no utility distributed by Apple should cause a kernel panic ***

I misspoke. William Boyd, Jr is correct, it is a piece of Canon software.

/Library/Image Capture/Support/LegacyDeviceDiscoveryHelpers/CIJScannerRegister.app/Contents/In fo.plist

<string>CIJScannerRegister version 1.0.0, Copyright CANON INC. 2009 All Rights Reserved.</string>

So why does it launch automatically when I am using Image Capture to find a scanner made by Brother?

I have had a Canon scanner attached to this machine before, but it was never on the network. "Discovery" of the Canon LiDE 600F occurred by plugging in the USB/power cable.

I'll try removing the Canon software to another location. Posting this in case Kernel Panic happens...

SOLVED:

- with this REMOVED, Canon LiDE scanner is recognized (and process "CIJScannerRegister" shows up when Image Capture is launched)

/Library/Image Capture/Support/LegacyDeviceDiscoveryHelpers/CIJScannerRegister.app

- both the Canon and Brother scanners are visible

- waiting for Brother scanner to sleep, to complete the test...

And it slept! No kernel panic!

Note:

The Canon site had downloads from 2009, 2010, and 2011. All three had different labels/purposes. I examined the 2011 and 2010 packages, and none of the install scripts would have removed the CIJScannerRegister.app All of them pointed at a completely different directory:

/Users/"$LOGINUSER"/Library/Preferences/Canon/ScanGear/"CanoScan LiDE 600F

Kernel panic in 10.6.6
