New EPSON NX420 cannot scan.

I installed the drivers from the CD and printing works fine through USB or through the network. I just tried to scan something and I can't get it to work, it keeps saying

"Communication error. Check the connection."

I heard the EPSON scan program will not work on Snow leopard, so I tried preview and image capture and both apps don't list the EPSON scanner.

I just completed a set of scans on my Epson CX6000.

The all-in-one must be directly connected to the Mac. Since I normally print via an Airport Express connection, to do the scanning, I used my MacBook Pro... 10.6.6 with the Epson printer update which followed a couple of days later from Apple.

On plugging the printer into the USB port on the MacBook Pro, the Preferences/Print&fax pannel was populated with the device.

Clicking on "scan" started things off and running.

The process does not use the Epson scan program but, I believe, uses Image Capture (I forgot to look).

In any event, the program does a nice job and is quire adjustable.

I agree with William - use the native Image Capture; it works much better than the Epson Scan software. My Epson is the Artisan 810 and I do have the Epson software installed; sometimes it launches, more often than not, it won't. When you launch Image Capture, make sure the Epson is connected via USB cable and is on; it should show under devices.

My name is Syd and I work for Epson America, Inc.

The Epson Stylus NX420 is wireless and should be able to print/scan with both USB and wireless connections. Unfortunately this is a generic error message with many variables. You may want to contact Epson tech support to best determine the issue, the direct number is 562)276-4382.

Here to help,
Syd

It does not scan from the machine as it will for a PC. It will scan wirelessly to Preview but if you're not right next to the machine you need 2 people to make a scan or you have to run back and forth. Epson says they are working on it,...(yeah-right- how long as 10.6 been out now?).
Don't download the latest driver from Epson's website until they prove it works with 10.6- it's a complete waste of time and you'll have to reinstall from the cd anyway to get the wireless printing to work.

I came to this forum because I'm now having issues with printing/scanning with the NX420 after the Lion upgrade (even though there supposedly was supposed to be no issues).

Anyway, prior to the upgrade, I had no issues scanning wirelessly using the Epson scan software. I just had to place something on the scan bed and then operate everything completely from my computer using the Epson scan software. No issues; it worked really well.

I just wanted to comment to let people know that this printer/scanner should be able to work with Macs. I was using it with a MacBook and iMac running 10.6.

I had this same issue with my Mac with OSX Lion. When I first installed the software the scanner worked from preview, I just had to open Preview, select Import From Scanner, and Include Networked Devices, and the Epson would show up. Then this quit working, and I could not find the Epson scanner, although the printer continued to function. My Linux and Windows machines would find the scanner just fine. Then because of something I wanted to do with a Windows machine, I seemed to have corrected the issue with the Mac. I assigned the Epson NX420 a static IP address in the router, by reserving a specific IP address for the Epson's MAC address. Once I did this, the scanner now shows up in Preview as it did before.

Make sure the printer is on.The power light should be on but not flashing. Determine which cartridge needs to be replaced by the black and colour Ink Out Light. Lower the output tray at the printer, then open the the printer cover. Hold down the cleaning button for three seconds. The print head moves left to the ink cartridge replacement position and the power light begins flashing. Lift up the clamp that holds the cartridge you want to replace as far as it will go.The cartridge rises partly out of the cartridge holder. Lift the cartridge out of the printer and dispose of it. Do not take the used cartridge apart or try to refill it.Remove the new ink cartridge from its protective bag. Remove only the yellow tape seal from the cartridge. Place the ink cartridge gently into the cartridge holder with the Label On the Cartridge Facing UP. Do not press down on the cartridge. Press the ink cartridge clamp down until it locks into place. Make sure the black and colour lights are off, then press the cleaning button. The printer moves the print head and begins charging the ink delivery system. This process takes about 30 seconds to complete. When the ink charging process is finished, the printer returns the print head to its home position and the power light stops flashing.
