Is automation a midi controller or a way of controlling midi controllers?

Is automation in Logic a midi controller as such, or is it just a way of controlling midi controllers?

G5 Quad, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Neither. You control pretty much every sound-aftecting parameter move and write this info into lanes, where you can change and refine it later.

Sure, but is the info contained in the lanes midi controller information or some other control?

No MIDI involved, and 10bit resolution instead of 7bit.
