APC asks about the 27 inch iMac 3.2GHz Apple Computer, "Does it have a power factor corrected power supply?"...

...with reference to connecting the APC uninterruptible power supply UPS BX1500G http://www.apc.com/products/resource/include/techspecindex.cfm?basesku=BR1500G

...connecting this UPS with the a) coax cable for Comcast internet, with the b) modem, with the c) Ethernet cable, with the d) power cord connecting the e) iMac

In looking for authoritative information would any of you kind folks out there have any hints, tips, pointers for tracking down the authoritative details about it having a power factor corrected power supply, nor not?

Most computer power supplies follow the current trend of providing whatever is needed as cheaply as possible. The same is true in other kinds of consumer electronics, such as audio and video equipment, and even CFL lamps. Switching power supplies don't individually have that low of a power factor to begin with, normally the harmonics and noise are relatively more of a concern (although still not that much).

That said, I don't specifically know if Apple uses power factor correction in its power supplies, but unless you are running many machines (as in larger business level numbers, which your choice of UPS doesn't indicate), you shouldn't have anything to worry about. Problems with low power factors typically involve overheating of conductors (which would be oversized or otherwise compensated for in a large office building), but you aren't going to be seeing anything like that in a residence or small office.

"Power Factor Corrected (PFC) power supplies are becoming increasingly popular in desktop PC’s in North America. Contributing to this trend is the fact that Energy Star 4.0 compliance as of July 2007, requires the use of PFC in desktop PC’s."
