Red sign near App Store icon

Hi,

I have downloaded some apps from the App Store recently and they have been working fine. However, I was wondering what the red circle with a number inside it on the App Store icon means? I assumed it was hinting at some software updates, carried out a software update and it wasn't that.

Hi,

You'd think that would be indicative of an update but maybe not. BTW, check for updates from the Mac App Store, not your Apple menu / Software Update...

See the top of the MAS menu on the right.

Hello Carolyn,

I suspect it is updates. My App store icon lodged in my dock was suddenly christened with a number 1 which I could not get rid of. Quite separately a little later I found that 'Alfred', the one download I had taken, had an update which I applied. Next time I saw the App store icon, the number 1 had disappeared.

It was an App Store update after all! I was checking for updates on the main system all that time!

I just went to the App Store for the first time today, and it says that I have an update, but when I click it, it gives this e-mail address "asdfff2011@mail.ru" and says that I should log in with that e-mail address to download my update. It's for Angry Birds and I don't even have a copy of Angry Birds on my computer. I've seen it on my son's iPad, but have never even played it.

My e-mail is a U.S. e-mail address.

How do I remove the update reminder?
