Delete Address in "New Mail" drop-down menu

I have deleted mac.com from my accounts page but it still appears in the drop down menu on my New Mail window. I also have me.com and other emails listed. How can I delete mac.com from this menu? I asked in MobileMe and they didn't know how. It is very frustrating as it pops up sometimes without my realizing it and then mail gets bounced back to me for the wrong email address.

Hi Judy - I have to say it's not that obvious but there is a way.

So you opened a new email and started typing an address into the "To" field. As you type, a number of matches from previous emails will appear and you may want to delete an address from that list. To do this, select that email address from the drop down menu so that it shows up as a recipient address in the "To" field. Now right-click or ctrl click on the address or click on the little triangle to the right of the address and you will see a pop-up menu with an option to "Remove from Previous Recipients List". Select that option and that address will disappear from the list.

Ah - that's surprising.

I just went into my Account settings and cleared the list of addresses from the "Email Address:" field and when I opened a new mail none of the deleted addresses showed.

Do you have multiple accounts configured? If so, make sure the address is not listed in one of the other accounts.

If this fails I can only suggest to delete com.apple.mail.plist from the folder <your name>/Library/Preferences/ByHost. But you would loose all your email settings. I haven't tried this myself and therefore would make a backup of any file you deleted. If you have Time Machine, make sure you have a current backup, i.e. check that Time Machine ran a successful backup before you make this change.

Cheers
Michael
