Speaker not working on Ipod Touch 4g

I purchased my Ipod touch 4g about a month ago or so. Within the past few weeks the internal speaker stopped working. Sound still comes out of headphones. I have already restored it, reset it, and restated it. Can anyone help me out or is it time for me to drive across town to the Apple Store?

I'm also having the same problem. I bought mine at the end of November and had no problems until the end of January, where it happened occassionally and now I can't get the sound to work at all unless the earphones are plugged in. Built in speaker doesn't work, not even for games.

I tried resetting and restoring it and nothing is working. Sometimes if I hold the speaker right up to my ear I can just barely hear the sound but I'm not about to hold the thing up to my ear and strain to hear music. I really don't want to have to send it in to get fixed but from what I've read so far it looks like I'm going to have to.

I am very disappointed cause honestly for all the bragging Apple does about how amazing their products are, something as simple as this should not be occurring with their product and it is clearly a problem since I am not alone in this issue.

Don't be disappointed. Every device has Hardware issues. Don't worry, go to the Apple store and you can request for a new one.

You mean the Apple store it'll take me a good hour to drive to from my house? I think they owe me a new iPod AND some of my money back.

And I can't believe you told me not to be disappointed. This is Apple. They sit there and talk about how amazing their products are and how they're soooo much better than all the other companies at everything...and something like this happens. No, this should not happen. The internal speaker on their mp3 player stops working, that says amature to me. Disappointed. Not that I ever inteded to, but now I definitely won't be purchasing an Apple product in the future.

Same problem here... Was working fine until I unplugged my headphones this morning after a run and that started it all. I don't have an Apple store right down the street to go to. I'm in the military and am currently in the middle of the desert. Can I request a new one from here? Probably not 😢 This thing keeps me sane over here... LOL

Sounds like someone who has a hangup about the higher price and higher quality of Mac products. Are you implying that PC products from other manufacturers are defect-free? Cause if that's true, it would really be some headline news. Just suck it up and go either get your iTouch replaced or your money back. Im sure whoever is working in the Apple store is gonna have a great time hearing your comments.

It's aggravating, but **** happens.

I have an Apple iPod Touch 4G. The speaker all of a sudden stopped working to play music aloud. And notfications come up and the sound or "ringtone" doesn't play. For Games the sound doesn't work either. My textnow app for free unlimited textmessaging and calling the sound or ringtone won't play either. This all happens when the volume is all the way UP!

You know whats really weird?

~When I go to settings and Sounds I make the volume go down by scrolling it, then I bring it back up. and it does the little example of how the ringtone will sound.. IT WORKS! and you can hear the sound prefectly...

This is getting to be really frustrating could this be a hardware issue?

Notifications, music, apps, and game sounds all work perfectly but only when I plug in my earphones.

PLEASE HELP!

I just had this problem and I tried everything like restoring the settings and nothing worked. Then I tried what 3v3Lyn said and now my speakers work! Go to settings>sounds>make the volume go all the way down by scrolling it down and then all the way up.>Then the button that say"change with buttons" turn it on and then off again. This worked for me and hopefully it works for everyone else.

My appologies for bumping an old and/or solved thread...

I am having the same issue, but am willing to offer some knowledge (not a solution, sorry):

This problem (at least on my device) seems to be a hardware problem only -- NOT software related, so any software "fix" will fall short. I have discovered upon attempting to clean my device (iPod Touch Gen 4) a bit, that its root may reside in the 30-pin dock connector, and may be caused by exposure to moisture. The 30-pin dock connector has (duh) 30 pins, all serving a purpose. Some of them are only used by the devices motherboard when connected to a cable, dock, etc., but most are used by the connected cable/device. There are pins for power for both USB and FireWire, and pins for data for both USB and FireWire. Then you have several pins for audio and/or video output for connecting to, for example, an iHome dock, etc. These would seem to be the troublesome pins, as when a circuit is made across the audio pins, the device disables the external speaker, and the "music" (not "Sound Effects") volume control, as audio docks usually have a volume control.

Please Note: I do not work for Apple, nor am I Licensed to service their equipment/devices. However, I am rather skilled and have a heap of experience with electronics of all sorts, including audio amplifiers, computers (Not Macintosh/Apple computers, sorry), TVs, VCRs, DVD players, optical drives, game consoles, ..... I have experience with computers both at the software level, and the hardware level. I have experience with the "pinouts", or pin configurations (which pin is where and its purpose), and frequently wire my own data, audio, video, and power cables when they become worn out and/or damaged.

Please Also Note: I am not listing my experience to gloat or be an ***hole, etc., but to inform any reader that I am in fact not full of s**t.

Hope this is helpful. If it is not, I am greatly sorry for your loss, as I do not know what I would do without my iPod (hence why I have not sent it in for repairs since it's still under the Apple Care warranty).
