Gmail on iPad

When I send mail from my gmail account using the mail app on the iPad, the recipient sees "From: Gmail" instead of "From: John Smith". It is confusing for them because you can't tell who the email is from. This only happens when I send mail from my iPad. If I log on to gmail through the browser, everything sends normally and the recipient can see who it's from.

How do I fix this?
