Safari won't connect to internet

Safari won't connect to internet (I'm on Firefox now and glad I had it as a backup!). I am getting a message that the computer isn't connected to the internet. But it is. Firefox works. I used to use it when I had a PC, but have been using Safari since I got my Mac a year ago. I haven't upgraded to 10.6.6 yet as I just got an external hard drive to back up my system with Time Machine before doing the upgrade. My data is backed up on Carbonite so I won't lose it, but after reading so many of the discussions about the latest Snow Leopard Upgrade I thought it best to wait until I backed up the whole system, in case something goes wrong. Software update didn't notify me automatically about the 10.6.6 update so I got a little concerned. I know that is an issue for another forum, but thought the more info ya'll have, the easier it might be to help me find an answer.
Safari worked fine last night. And I can tell from my modem that I am connected to the internet. Plus I am here at Apple Discussions so it must be something with Safari. Is this when I trash a plist? If so, which one? Or do I need to do something else? Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks ahead of time

nope. comcast is my ISP and it is their modem. never had this problem before. and i have no add ons and no extensions. and since I am having no trouble with Firefox it seems like it must be something with Safari. I am thinking of downloading another browser in case something goes wrong with this one. any suggestions? I have heard that Chrome is also good. I want a few backups so I can reach this forums. They are my first place to go with a problem. I learn an awful lot from "eavesdropping" on what others ask about.

thanks for responding.

Hi again,

Sorry, that wasn't the problem. Does iTunes connect?

Some like Chrome. I haven't used it to recommend. Others here may have a recommendation for another.

The reason I asked about the ISP Xplornet and their modem is due to a recent problem where Safari would not connect using their modem but Firefox would. Your situation sounded familiar. If iTunes does not connect it might suggest a similar ISP problem and their modem and the assigned IP address.

Hi again,

Let me ask for some better help for you that is familiar with this problem (if in fact it is a similar problem with the IP address and your ISP.

The other topic concerning this can be found at:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2725608

It is a somewhat lengthy thread but may just apply to your situation.

Anyways I will see if I can call on some better help for you. Hang in there. Best to arm yourself with enough info before contacting Comcast so they might know what you are dealing with fully.

littleshouders 🙂

edit: I have posted for some extra help for you that may have a better idea of what's going on if it is your ISP and their modem and how it handles the IP address causing Safari and iTunes not to connect. Hang in there it may take awhile but I'm sure someone will pop in to help.

thank you. Interesting also is that although Chrome downloaded okay and imported my Safari bookmarks, when I tried to get to this website with it, it tells me that the website is not available. Nor is any other website that I try to get . Seems like Firefox is the only browser that will work . and you are right, the more information I have the better. I used to love troubleshooting but prefer troubleshooting other people's problems rather than my own.

laverne's Mom --
I doubt it is Comcast.

Can you try this?
Open up Chrome and delete all the Safari bookmarks.
Then restart Chrome and try browsing again, via Google.

For Safari:
QUIT Safari.
Go to your Users/YourName or HOME folder.
Open that and go down to the SAFARI folder.
Take that folder to the desktop.
Restart Safari. Any Better?

I just read the thread you referred me to. and printed it, but I have to be honest and say that I understood almost nothing about it. But hopefully, this has a simpler fix. Anything involving doing something in Terminal(?) makes me nervous
Do you think that I should try some websites that I don't normally go to? Sounded like a number of answers thought that Firefox was using the cache to connect to the internet? I am worried that if I lose Firefox I am in Big Trouble because nothing else will get me back here.

No, I didn't expect you to try the troubleshooting suggested to the OP in that topic due to the fact we do not know yet if your problem is related.

If ~Bee has some suggestions for troubleshooting Safari then by all means try those and see if you have any results. Just keep in mind that iTunes does not connect also which I believe is more related to something amiss with your connection and the IP address. Firefox connects differently than Apple related apps.

edit: Also, if Software Update, when you open it, does not connect and attempt to check for updates that would be further credence to their being a problem with your connection and Apple apps.

YEAH!!!!
I got to you through Safari!!!!! and I get iTunes Store also. No bookmarks though. Does this mean I am going to have to recreate my gazillion Bookmarks? or can I restore them through Carbonite?? I had to do that once before when my cat walked on my keyboard and deleted them. I also do have a copy of the plist? What do I do with the Safari folder on my desktop? Trash it? Anyway, THANK YOU THANK YOU AND Little Shoulders Thank you too for getting Bee.

I tend to get overexuberant at times. and I am verbose. But I appreciate it.

What do you think caused the problem? and is there a way to prevent it? and am I asking too many questions.?

I am going to mark this as answered and solved if you think it is.
