Saying canon's raw files (.crw) are unsupported

When I shoot in RAW with my Canon EOS D60, plug it into my computer, and import the .crw files straight into Aperture 3 (using the trial at the moment), the resulting image is a black box telling me the image format is unsupported. Everywhere I look says that Aperture supports the EOS D60 along with it's .crw file format.

Also, when I use Image Capture to import directly onto my desktop, Photoshop CS3 nor Preview are able to read the raw files.

Any Ideas?

Some technical details:

Camera:
Canon EOS D60
Firmware 1.0.4 (latest)

Software:
OS X 10.6.6
Aperture 3.1.1 (trial)
Digital Camera RAW Compatibility 3.5

27" iMac i7 (mid 2010), Mac OS X (10.6.6)

Ok, and I just realise that you mention problems with CS3 above. It seems the files simply are corrupt. The question is where things go wrong. It could be for example the transfer process, the cable or a problem in the camera itself.

I would take the camera to your friend and ask him to use his cable and download the files to see if there still is a problem. If there is, then the problem is in the camera. You may then want to reset the camera to default settings or even bring it back to the dealer. If there is no problem with his cable and his computer, try with your cable and his computer, and see if the problem is there.

The problem does not seem related to Aperture anyhow, as Adobe products have problems as well with the files.

Hi,

I have previously in this forum noted that I don't have a receipt for installing 3.4, nor was it ever offered in Software Update. However, when I looked up the cameras it supports, those same cameras are listed as supported by 10.6.5. If I look up Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.4, it carries the same release date as did the update for 10.6.5. It should have been installed when you installed 10.6.5 update.

Let me recommend that you now download the Combo Update for 10.6.6, and install it over your existing OS. It would the one found at:

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1348

The Combo Update would be expected to correct any flaws in elements of 10.6.6 and prior, so perhaps also for cameras supported in RAW 3.4, or earlier.

Just received a RAW image from a friend who also shoots with a Canon. It too is a .crw file. His loaded instantly in Aperture and I was able to preview it in the finder no problem. I sent him one of my images that I am unable to recognize to see if he has any luck, although I'm doubtful.

Since they are both .crw files it doesn't seem like it would matter which camera it comes from. Am I wrong to think that?

Update: Just looked at the metadata and his file came from the D60 I currently have from a shoot back when it was his. Something is obviously wrong with the camera now.

It matters a lot. Each camera model has its own version of the crw format.

You may want to try to shoot with a different lens. Which one(s) are you using now?

In some rare cases, Aperture cannot handle raw files because the lens needs some additional processing that is not implemented.

As a workaround for your existing files you could try to use Adobe DNG Converter to convert the files to DNG format, and see if that works better. (I am usually no fan at all of the DNG format, but there is no harm in trying it.)

Thanks Magnus.

I have 3 lenses; a 20-35mm, 100-300mm and 28-105mm macro. All yeild the same results.

I also downloaded Adobe's DNG converter and it tells me "The source folder does not contain any supported camera raw files."

Any chance your camera is set to some compressed RAW, and not full RAW it will shoot? The former is typically not supported by any software other than that of the camera maker.

The D60 only has one RAW setting that I can tell.

A side note, I removed both batteries from the camera to try and reset it to all of it's default settings and although the settings were in fact reset, there was no change in raw compatibility.

That was exactly what I planned to do next. I have a card reader at work, so I brought the card into work today to test it out. What do you know, it loads up just fine. It was the cable the whole time. What a relief.
