Ipod Repair - Warranty?

Alright, I'll try to explain my situation and I'm hoping someone can kindly point me in the right direction; I really don't want to replace my iTouch at all costs, repairing it for a minor fee would be so much better.

So my problem is that the left audio channel doesn't work; for some odd reason sound has stopped coming through the left side of anything whenever I plug a audio jack into it. I have managed to conclude that none of my ear buds or headsets are broken and I have spent the past half hour googling and surfing through apple forums about issues similar to mine and it appears to be a hardware issue.

Now the worse part to dread, at least for me; I bought this 2nd Gen 16GB Ipod Touch second hand so it has no warranty, I also checked and I am 100% sure that this iTouch is not under any warranty. I'm unsure what to do from my current position because from what I understand now after thoroughly researching; to take it to the Apple Store and have it repaired, would cost me $149... Which is extremely steep considering the fact that they will, as stated in the FAQs and various Policies that I have read thus far, Send/Give/Return to me a completely different Ipod Touch (I'm assuming this means the product returned will not have the same Model Number) that is not the original one I sent in.

I kindly ask any viewers of this post to just, enlighten me; I really hope I do not need to pay $149 to "repair" my iTouch. I was hoping this whole problem would be settled over a few hours and maybe $60.

You might be able to fix it yourself. See:

I'm not too sure how iResQ works or their legitimacy but it sounds like a much cheaper alternative to $149. Do you have any background or personal experience with them?

I'll keep the idea of fixing it myself in the back of my head, I'd love to fix it myself but I'm honestly just afraid of breaking it even more while trying to fix it.

Am in the UK. My son has the exact same problem his is engraved for his 21st it's a 2nd generation itouch 16GB. I made a phone enquiry to apple and was quoted £149 repair. We then logged on to the apple site and went through the request repair procedure it came back with a price of £109. Much more reasonable
My question though is they say the repair will be for like since they don't do a 16GB itouch anymore will they actually repair the original itouch of send out a 4th gen model ?.
Has anyone gone through this request repair procedure before

Many Thanks

Apple exchanges iPods with a refurbished unit of the same model, of which they have plenty, I'm sure. You will have the option of having the replacement unit engraved the same way as the original if you wish. See:

http://www.apple.com/uk/support/ipod/service/faq/

The service price can be found here:

http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices/#uk

The quoted price includes shipping. You can save a few pounds if you can take the iPod to an Apple Store near you, though they will not be able to provide engraving.

Regards.
