Iphone is not installing apps after restore

I got my iphone 3GS replacement ( a brand new set) today for some defects in my old phone. Now I used the backup in my itunes to restore the new 3GS (after updating the ios 4.2.1). Everything went fantastic, all the sms-es, even the last calls made, contacts came back, but the trouble started when I tried to install a app/ringtone! It's not responding! It doesn't install any more apps other than what it had after the restore. Can anyone please help me?? I am confused!

Any error messages?

Are you installing directly on the device, or are you downloading the app via iTunes and trying to sync to the device?
Do you have sync apps selected in iTunes?

thank you for the reply. I hope you will be able to help me out here. I am not installing the apps directly, but sync-ing it through itunes. After I have restored the new iphone from the backup of the old iPhone, I selected the apps i want to install and then in the itunes page it shows I have selected and it shows the 4 pages in the itunes too! but when i click on the sync, it does three steps only and then checks the musics/tracks and that's it! after the sync when I try to check the apps, no apps are installed in the iphone but the itunes keeps showing i've installed the apps.
this thing is also occuring when I try to install the custom ringtones! And also the photos! In all the cases in the itunes i select what to install but when I try to sync it does with only 3 steps and doesn't install anything aprt from music! Pleaseeeee help!
