CCK Not Recognized / Not Functioning

I received a 16GB iPad WiFi+3G on Christmas Eve. It was ordered from Apple so it came with iOS 4.2.1 already loaded on it. I also received a Camera Connection kit.

After getting everything set up in iTunes, etc. I connected my iPhone to the iPad via the USB dongle. It worked without issue. I also inserted an SD card I pulled out of a digital photo frame that had several JPG files in the root folder but got nothing out of the other dongle. I now know that the files have to be device-generated (what's up with that?)

On Christmas day I was taking several pictures at the family dinner with my Nikon D70. The D70 only takes CF cards so I have an adapter that allows me to use SD cards in the camera. The PNY 1GB card I was using already had several pictures from another event. When I inserted this card into the SD dongle my iPad switched to the photo app and to the camera tab as expected. I was able to transfer the photos from the evening and pass the iPad around for everyone to see what I had just taken. Very cool! I was able to repeat the process later in the evening and show some more pictures I had taken.

Fast-forward to yesterday at my sister's wedding reception. I had brought my iPad and CCK with the intention of doing something similar to what I did at Christmas. I was using the same camera and the same SD card. The only difference was that I used the camera to format the SD card before shooting any pictures of the wedding or reception.

I turned on the iPad, inserted the SD card into the dongle, then inserted the dongle into the dock connector... nothing happened. I have a case on it so I removed it from the case to make sure I was getting a good connection and repeated the process - still nothing. I took the card out of the dongle, inserted the dongle, then inserted the card - nothing. My nephew was shooting pictures with his brand new Canon 60D on a 16GB SD card. I tried the card out of his camera with the same results. The iPad has 3.3GB of free space.

I later remembered that I had brought a USB cable with me so I used the USB dongle to connect the camera directly to the iPad. When I used mass-storage mode the camera would react, seeing that it was plugged into something, but I got nothing on the iPad. I switched the camera to PTP mode and neither end reacted when I connected them.

Thinking it was some sort of issue with folder structure or folder naming, this morning I tried the card out of my Lumix DMC-LZ8. The card is a SanDisk 8GB MicroSD in an adapter. I tried the same steps as previously (card->dongle->dock, dongle->dock-card->dongle, etc.) and got no reaction from the iPad. I tried the Lumix using the USB cable that came with it but that also failed.

Just to be sure I connected the USB dongle to my iPhone and the iPhone said the accessory was not compatible. When I connected the iPhone to the iPad via USB, I got zip.

So, I have tried the SD dongle with three different SD cards from three different cameras and the USB dongle with two different cameras and an iPhone and I get nada from the iPad, although I have successfully connected the iPhone and an SD card in the past. Is there a certain sequence in which everything has to be connected/powered? Am I not holding my tongue right? Did I mis the addendum that included the sacred chant? Or does this $20 time waster only work on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day?

Thanks,
Joe

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.

That is very strange that it would work one time and then fail...take a look at the SD cards with a computer and see what the top level folder is...the iPad wants to see DCIM.

You might also try a power cycle of the iPad, completely power down, wait a few seconds and power up. If that doesn't clear things, try a hard reset, hold both the sleep and home buttons until the Apple Logo appears and let the iPad restart. You will have to reenter WiFi settings but hard resets do help clear up certain problems.

If these steps don't help, a visit to the Apple Store genius bar to have them see why the iPad isn't working like it should would be a good idea.

Can't recommend a single fix but, rather, a range of things to try . . . One or more may help.

A. Proper Steps - first thing I check when things go awry. Recommended sequence for using the CCK as per the User Guide:

1 Insert the SD Card Reader or Camera Connector
2 insert SD card or connect USB cable. ....... If you’re using iPhone, make sure it’s turned on and unlocked. To connect a camera, make the sure the camera is turned on and in transfer mode.
3 Unlock iPad - ( +Note that this means the ipad is expected to start from a locked/asleep condition. It may not be absolutely required, but I've never had a failure to launch when doing it this way+ ). The Photos app opens and displays the photos and videos that are available for importing.
4 Select the photos and videos you want to import or delete.
5 Import and/or delete, either all or selected, as you desire. Decide to keep on camera or not.
6 Disconnect the SD Card Reader or Camera Connector. (+my own preference is to first exit Photos, go back to Home+)

If the approach above bears no fruit, then I'd step to the parts of the User Guide that cover what to do when things just don't work the way they should. The following section is pulled out of the Tips & Troubleshooting section:

+Restarting and Resetting iPad+
+If something isn’t working right, try restarting iPad, force quitting an app, or resetting iPad.+

+Restart iPad: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPad. To turn iPad back on, press and hold the Sleep/Wake until the Apple logo appears.+

+Force quit an app: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPad for a few seconds until a red slider appears, then press and hold the Home button until the app quits.+

+If you can’t turn off iPad or if the problem continues, you may need to reset iPad. This should be done only if turning iPad off and on doesn’t resolve the problem.+

+Reset iPad: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.+

+iPad Still Doesn’t Respond After Reset+
+Reset iPad settings. From the Home screen choose Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. All your settings are reset, but your data and media aren’t deleted.+
+If that doesn’t work, erase all content on iPad. See Resetting iPad.+
+If that doesn’t work, restore the iPad software. See Removing a Backup.+
