Can I fax using an ethernet printer connection?

I recently bought a new iMac with OS 10.6.6. My HP 6949dt printer still shows fax capability although it doesn't work. My DSL provider says that I should be able to connect my printer to the router via an ethernet cable and then fax using the printer drivers. Is this correct or am I going to need a new fax machine or all-in-one?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.6), 3.06Ghz intel core i3, 4 GB 1333MHz DDR3

Faxing is done through voice lines, not DSL. If your fax machine is connected to the voice line as before, it should work as it did before. If it supports faxing with Macs, it still should; if it did not, it still will not. If you have gotten rid of your voice service, then you cannot use it. You would have to subscribe to an internet fax service instead.
