I recently bought a new iMac with OS 10.6.6. My HP 6949dt printer still shows fax capability although it doesn't work. My DSL provider says that I should be able to connect my printer to the router via an ethernet cable and then fax using the printer drivers. Is this correct or am I going to need a new fax machine or all-in-one?

Mac OS X (10.6.6),

Faxing is done through voice lines, not DSL. If your fax machine is connected to the voice line as before, it should work as it did before. If it supports faxing with Macs, it still should; if it did not, it still will not. If you have gotten rid of your voice service, then you cannot use it. You would have to subscribe to an internet fax service instead.
Looking at the manual for the 6940 it looks like it's describing how you can use the printer to scan a document and then send it as fax from the computer.
Also, while the printer appears to have ethernet and USB connections, it doesn't have a connection for a telephone line which would be necessary if it were able to send a fax.
I've used the printer for years to send and receive faxes. It's just since my upgrade to the new computer that I no longer have the connection. My DSL provider said that the router has a modem included and that I should be able to use it as it is connected to the phone line. I'm just trying to avoid buying another piece of equipment.
If your router has a back-up phone modem built in, it might be possible to use it as a fax modem. You could try adding it in the Print & Fax control pane. Just add a printer, select Fax, and see if the modem shows up. If it does not, you may need further instruction from your DSL provider.
The router did not show up in the print & fax control pane. I found a deal on an HP 4-in-1 printer so I bought that and installed it. I can now fax from my computer again. Thanks to everyone who took the time to help me.
