Power Mac G5 firmware update & pdf manual?

ok, I've got this "new" G5 (1.6 GHz, uniprocessor, 1 GB Ram - but more on this later) and I've tried to update the firmware to 5.1.5f2 booting with Tiger from a firewire external hd (the internal hd has Leopard, updated to 10.5.8 and to the latest everything else). I carefully (sort of, more later) followed the instructions provided by Apple and the Installer: "click shut down in the firmware updater ... press and hold the power button ... until you hear a long tone..." etc. but then the next step is never the status bar of the firmware updater but instead it boots from the internal hd, obviously without installing the updated firmware 😟
The only point I'm not following of the instructions is the "remove any third party Ram" bit as I don't have any (and it's obviously not easy and cheap to find Apple branded Ram for an oldish Mac/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png); also yesterday when I opened the G5 to check what was already inside I discovered there were not only 2 third party DDR2700 333 modules (512 MB each) and 2 other DDR2700 modules (again both 512), one a 133 MHz and the other with both a 166 MHz and a 333 MHz sticker on it ( User uploaded file).
I removed the "freak" modules (according to the System Profiler their lots were "empty") but it didn't change anything for the firmware update. Do I really need to use Apple certified Ram? Or maybe it's because I'm booting from an external? I'm going to get another internal very soon anyway (possibly even today).
Also, last but not least: I've not been able to find a pdf manual to my G5, the only one I've found on the Apple support I suspect it's about the 2004 machines... any link to the manual for a 1st generation G5? Many thanks/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png 🙂

Hi-

You will need to update the firmware with the firmware installer on an internal drive.
The process does not allow I/O via external devices.
I suspect it's about the 2004 machines... any link to the manual for a 1st generation G5?

Is this the one that you have?

There are many sources of the Apple Service Source manual for the 2003 G5 if you Google.

ok, I've just got a brand new 500 GB Sata hd, I'll install it later this afternoon, carbon copy the external there (or maybe in the smaller hd already in the G5 and use the new one for Leopard) and upgrade from there.
Yes, the manual I've found is the same of your link, good to know it was already the right one 🙂
Thanks

well, I've tried to update the firmware both from the new internal hd (with Leopard) and the old one (with Tiger) but it always fail: while with the external I reached at least the "long tone" bit, now when I press and hold the power button I never hear the long tone anymore (and neither the power light starts flashing) but after some time there's the Open Firmware window asking for "mac-boot" or shutting down... any idea?!?

The original firmware update, 5.1.5 f1 had two versions, one for Panther, one for Tiger.
The 5.1.5 f2 update only lists OS X 10.3.5 as required, but I wonder if it is because Leopard is installed.
Either that or the RAM..... those are the remaining unknowns.

Booting into OF is interesting.
Rather than "mac-boot", maybe type "reset-nvram", enter, "reset-all", enter.

See if things work after the NVRAM reset.

earlier today I've received and installed the new Ram modules direct from Crucial (2 GB in total). The new Ram seems to be working fine, and it has passed Rember tests (I've uninstalled the 2 original 512 MB modules and so far not installed them back). However I've tried again to update the firmware, and it's just the same: no success, no long tone and the G5 boots to OF... any idea?!?

Ok, I understand there's no other way to upgrade the firmware then by getting Apple branded Ram. Now, as it would be quite time consuming and possibly also rather expensive to find such 2nd hand modules, I'd like to know if there's actually something wrong in leaving my G5 with firmware 5.1.4f0? Apparently the Power Mac is working just fine as it is now, however I'd like to get soon a better gpu than the 64 MB GeForce FX 5200 but I wonder if a newer card would work with an outdated firmware or not?

Hi-

If you were talking 5.1.5f1, there would be a reason to want the update.
But, since you are running a stable machine with the old firmware, I don't think that you are missing out on much.

The original update, 5.1.5f1, was for machines that would not sleep.
Trouble is, 5.1.5f1 broke a whole bunch of stuff, non-sleep related, which is why 5.1.5f2 came out.

I don't see that the old firmware would give any reason to not upgrade the graphics card.
The original firmware apparently works fine, and subsequent updates didn't address anything but power management.

Note that the issues were not with ALL, machines, just some.
In fact, more people had issues after the updates than before.

Graphics cards will be limited by OS version alone, so get what you want to run in the OS of your choice.
