Opening ppt. or pptx file from e-mail

I am trying to open ppt. or pptx. files from my e-mail. I have the keynote app installed on my iPad. When I veiw the e-mail that has either a ppt. or pptx file in it and press the attachment i just get an error message saying 'mail cannot open this attachment'. The ppt. file seems to show up in the e-mail as a 'winmail.dat' don't know if the mail program is converting it or just recognizing it incorrectly. What do I need to do to open these files, which I thought keynote was supposed to suport.
Thanks

iPad, iOS 4

Well it looks like the problem must lie in the e-mail source. I was trying to send the files from my work e-mail. If I actual go to gmail in a web browser on the PC then fwd it to the same e-mail and check it on my iPad it opens. Or if I send it from the computer from gmail to the same gmail account it also will open. Very odd. Has anyone seen anything like this happen before?

My wife has had the following happening to her lately:

On some few occasions, she gets an email with an attachment that doesn't register on the mac (doesn't exist), or an email that that has no headings. On her ipod Touch, she'll have the same email (uses IMAP) and then forwards it to the same account. A little later on the mac, the mail arrives and all is well.

Not the same situation since an iPad isn't involved, but the problem is similar. This just began happening a few weeks ago. Her account isn't gmail, so there's a different provider involved. I can't help but think the email's okay (since when forwarded everything is straightened out) and that somehow the mail client skips a beat. Could be the same on your iPad. (FWIW, I have an iPad but don't have the problem; using the same provider as my wife.)
