Q: Screen flickering to black

My ATV is flickering intermittently. It flickers black and then back again, literally taking only seconds, but then keeps happening on and on, making everything unwatchable.

This is NOT the negative image problem, however it is a Sony Bravia KDL-W4000.

Anybody else having this problem, suggest a fix?

Sorry, last week was a little busy.

There is no flickering anymore! It seems that it worked.
I would advice anyone with a Sony TV to uprgade the firmware. Please contact your local Sony inhome-service if you need help.

Still no flickering during these weeks?

Where did you get the firmware from? The Sony online support centre doesn't offer any fw upgrade for this model, as far as I can tell.

I've got a memory stick with a newer firmware version sent to me from an authorized Sony service center here i Sweden. The swedish Sony online support couldn't provide me with the firmware either.

However this update doesn't solve the flickering issue for me.

After the update the TV shows this firmware revision: E.L-FA-Q-C.T.PT-A.CY.BE

I've seen this firware version (except for the two last chars) beeing discussed in a number of foras from the beginning of 2010 so this is/might be a older version than the one MartoC_01 got hold of since his version is dated 2010/12

It would be interesting to hear what firmware revision that is shown on MartoC_01 TV.

Yes, I would also like to know which firmware revision MartoC_01 has... And if the flickering is gone for good.

In the meantime, marc_h, would it be possible for you to email me a copy of the firmware (rofx73 // gmail) ?

Do you know what are the new features of your new firmware, if not the discussed HDMI handshake fix?

Unfortunately I didn't copy the contents on the memory stick before sending it back to the repair center.

I don't know whether this firmware update were supposed to fix any HDMI handshake issues.

I contacted a Sony service centre here in Norway, and they sent me a new firmware, though they couldn't tell if the firmware was supposed to fix this particular HDMI issue. After the firmware upgrade, I thought the flickering was gone, but later on the problem reappeared.   :-(

Then, after some more searching around, I found some discussion about the problem being related to ATV2's use of 50Hz refresh rate in combination with Sony's "full pixel" mode on some models. Switching the TV back to "normal" display area seems to solve the problem!   :-)

Using the old-fashion "overscan" mode nowadays seems quite strange, since the technique was actually used to compensate for old CRT-screens (1930-1970) not being able to properly display the outer edges of the picture. Today, 1:1 pixel mapping should be standard, at least for digital signal sources.

Hope to see a(nother) fix from Apple...
