iphone 4 constantly dropping calls or "call failed"

I've been having nothing but trouble the past couple weeks with dropping calls or getting the "failed call" showing up when trying to make a call. It happens more times than not and i spoke with Apple today and was told that after you try all the resets and restore options it should be fine. If that doesn't work, its more than likely a SIM card issue and needs to be cleaned or replaced. I did all the restore and backup and all the other garbage they advised me to do, and still did not work. Took the SIM card out and im not sure if its supposed to sparkle in the light, but its pretty **** clean. Re-inserted it, and still dropping calls or "call failed". Next option is getting a new SIM card tomorrow and i'll update what i find out.

Previously, in July, some moron from Canada was beaking how its a service issue and he's on Rogers network, blah blah blah and he's never dropped a call and its superior to AT-T and mentioned something about how all the ppl would have no trouble if they were on the Rogers network.

Well i'm from Canada and work with 2 other ppl, surprise, from Canada who are having the same problem with the iphone 4........its not a network thing whatsoever, because ppl on Telus and Rogers are having the same problem. Im assuming he was from Toronto where the center of the universe is and he was basically just being an idiot, so for that moron, i apologize to ALL who are having issues with the iphone 4 and hopefully Apple gets their act together and solves this issue!!

When i spoke to apple and my carrier, they were convinced it was NOT a carrier problem with our situation where we are from. I have other friends on the same network with different phones, and they don't drop any calls.

Another reason they both thought it was the phone, is because it happens in random places. Apple and my carrier both said that if it was more noticeable in certain areas, they would be leaning towards a carrier issue. So i will give Apple some props for saying that it was more likely an Iphone issue

Dude, I'm having the same problem: I'm with Telus and I noticed it always happens with the following situation:
- when my call exceeds 5-10 min, I lost audio of the call but the person on the other end can still hear me
- regardless of holding (or not holding) the phone. It could be in my hand or on a surface (eg: couch or table)
- while using the headphones headset (usually with the headset plugged in or even without
- regardless of battery power or being charges
- whether or not it's in a case (it's in a griffn reveal bumpe/protector case)

This has on happened recently and I've had my iPhone for about 2 months now, never once dropped it.
When I try to call the other person back, I get "call failed" but it works normal after 1 or 2 attempts.

Hey everyone, I think I finally got the solution for this. It appears to be a NETWORK ISSUE with the phone provider. I am a Telus subscriber and after speaking to a cool tech guy from Calgary named "Corey", he performed the following task:

He told me he had to reset 4 settings on the network for my account. A few of which were under something called "STF viewer" "PLMN" and "PRL"...

Aftewards, I had to go to my iphone: General > Reset > Reset network settings

I am now able to complete phone calls (and apparently my reception sounds better to my call recipients/callers too). The problems is not related to a "faulty device" or "something" you did... If the problem happens again, I'll call my provider and have them investigate the ticket further as it could be a bigger network issue (with GSM) but chances are it just requires a simply settings reset on the backend of your provider's data support team.

After doing the reset, all I had to do was reconfigure my wifi password. No other settings were lost. (and more importantly, I didn't have to re-restore my iphone, didn't have to go to Apple and sound like one of those "iPhone 4 vs HTC cartoon characters" and didn't have to yell like a child to anyone. Just be cool when you call your provider's tech people, these guys are good hard working people and will help you and will have a better chance at success if they empathize with you and don't feel annoyed by you (I'm in IT, I know how it is).

I was also told that if I had to call back and if they had to reinvestigate, the next steps would probably involve having my SIM card changed but based on the previous tech's experience, it would be highly unlikely. I will update you further should I encounter any further issues. Just don't be hating on the iPhone 4 as most people do coz it is a sweet device if you can understand the tech specs behind the underlying issues.

Hope this helps you guys and anyone else who got frustrated by this problem!

Hi everyone,

I'm seeing the same behaviour in Ireland on the Vodafone network, with multiple users. I've since done all the suggested resets and have just received a placement phone today however I got the same behaviour on the first call - very disappointed. I will be changing my SIM card next, but I highly doubt that's the issue.

I have done various testing on this and there is no pattern. Doesn't matter if I'm holding the device or not, inside or outside, city or country, 3G or not, Wifi connected or not, bumper or not. The signal goes from full bars to 1 bar at anytime during a call, resulting in being dropped.

Interestingly, when calling Vodafone to tell them about my problem, they didn't even question it. They sent me a new one straight away without even looking at the first one. This seems to suggest that this particular network is accepting responsibility or may believe it is their fault.

I know other iP4 users on the O2 network in Ireland, and they don't have this issue - further evidence that this might be a network issue where it might be struggling to hold calls on these deveices.

Personally I think it's a device issue. No other device on the market behaves like this. Ericsson, Nokia, Blackberry etc have been making phones for much longer than Apple - I think Apple still have a few more things to learn on the hardware side.

I think we're just unfortunate victim's of Apple's first product failure in an otherwise fantastic product line over the last decade.

Apple has just told me I do not likely need to reset my phone (and spend half a day getting all of my settings and data back) - have already done a reset network settings as well as TELUS doing some work on their end in terms of "fixing" my settings/information on their network. I don't seem to have a problem with a call randomly dropping if I'm standing still, however the phone seems to have major problems when I'm moving around in the city. I can repeat specific locations of dropped calls, indicating that the phone or the network is having a hard time handing the call from one tower to another as I move through the city.

Apple seems to think this is likely a network issue as it has only been happening to me for the last few weeks (and nothing has changed otherwise with my phone OS, settings, etc...and it hasn't been dropped, whacked, drowned or anything else).

Telus has suggested that I try a new SIM card, Apple doesn't think that will do anything - I suppose I will try the SIM card anyway...if that solves the problem, I'll post an update.

Anyone else having this problem, in an urban centre ONLY when they're moving around?

Cheers!
