How do I know which generation ipod nano I have?

just bought a new nano today and don't know the generation. It's a 16GB and I'm trying to sync a video with no luck. When I plug in my nano I only get a music folder. Can you help me sync a movie that I have already added to my itunes library and formatted it to ipod.
