My six month old imac suddenly has a very very loud fan blowing when I turn it on. I assume that is not a good thing. any ideas? It's still under warranty thank God.
You have an intel, I'll ask that you post be moved to the proper forum. Since you are still covered by warranty, you should contact Apple and have a Genius look at it. You probably have a faulty power supply unit or a bad fan.
If the power button was being held down when the system was plugged in (or other means to power the cord) then it goes into a special mode that fans run full blast. You need to reset the SMC to fix.
As captfred mentioned you need to do a SMC reset. Here are instructions:
*SMC RESET*
• Shut down the computer.
• Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
• Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
• Release the power button.
• Attach the computers power cable.
• Press the power button to turn on the computer.
*PRAM RESET*
• Shut down the computer.
• Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
• Turn on the computer.
• Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
• Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
You read my mind! I needed instructions. Believe it or not I work in IT support on pcs and while I only use Macs at home, my knowledge of fixing them has diminished once I started working strictly on pcs.
Hello. I'm having the same problem in a brand new iMac (i bought it 2/27/2011). Fan is incredibly loud and running at full speed after I turn on computer. I've tried to solve it reseting SMC but didn't work. Any idea on how to fix it? thanks
