Cant watch XVid movies

I watch videos online that play in the xvid format and since I got my new MacBook Pro it will not let me open them because I need the xvid codec and according to the website, it's not compatible with my computer. Through the help of google, I found this site: http://www.xvidmovies.com/mac/ and I followed the directions exactly. I have Quicktime 7, I downloaded DivX, and the XviD codec for mac os x, and dropped the correct file into the library/quicktime folder like it said. It still wont play the movies. I restarted quicktime and that did not work, then I restarted the whole computer too, just in case... still no luck. Any advice?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.6)

Hi Soupy,
do you have these components:
"x264Codec.component"
"XviD_Codec 1.0 alpha.component"
"XVIDDelegate.component"
(in: HD/Library/QuickTime)

Remove the DivX and XviD codecs and install Perian.

In that folder I have:
AppleIntermediateCodec.component
AppleMPEG2Codec.component
DivX Decoder.component
DivX Encoder.component
XVIDDelegate

On the Perian website it doesn't list XVid on the file types it supports.

When I have codec problems, I always turn to VLC Player. This thing, on both my Macs and Windows machines, plays anything I've ever thrown it's way. IMHO, it beats both Quicktime and Windows Media Player hands down.

FWIW, it also ignores country codes on DVDs.

will the VLC player play movies that play THROUGH a website? it's not something i'm saving to my hard drive.

I think you can open a URL in VLC so you might be able to stream it from wherever it is. Can't say I've tried before.

I downloaded the VLC player. Now a few videos I have saved on my computer that did not want to play will play now... however it still will not play the videos through the website. I tried putting the URL of the video in to open it, but its still not opening.

Did you use "Open Network" in the "File" menu?

I'm having the same issue right now. I downloaded the XviD_1.0alpha from the apple site which lead me to another site.

It says it's compatible with OS X 10.4 and later. When I open it that's when it says only "REQUIRES OS X 10.4".

This is how I installed it, but it doesn't work.

To install this component, just drag the File "XviD_Codec 1.0 alpha.component" into Library/QuickTime. The Library directory can be found either at your home directory (to install just for the actual user) or at the top-level of your startup volume (this needs an administrator account). DO NOT PUT IN: /System/Library/QuickTime.
It is possible that the QuickTime directory does not yet exists. In that case you can create it yourself. Pay attention to capital letters if you use a case sensitive file system (i.e. UFS).

I tried VLC by opening network, but nothing happens.
