Unable to install iPhone Configuration Utility profile...

iPad 16GB w/o cell, iOS4.2.1, configured as my personal iPad currently. Wanting to use it to test rolling out many iPads. Getting the error: "Safari Could not install a profle due to an unknown error", when connecting to the URL for the .mobileconfig file on a web server. Also tried exporting profile with no signing or encryption, and get same result. Is it necessary to reset device prior to attempting to apply the profile?

The file does open in the browser (IE8) as an XML file, when not encrypted of course, so it does seem legit.

Ideas on how to proceed are appreciated.

Will the profile install using a USB connection to the device?

We use USB for deploying all of our profiles, so I can't speak to the issue of deploying one from a web server, however I have seen a number of situations where a profile would fail to install because the device didn't like the way 1 of the payloads was configured. Since you get the same error usb and over the web, it almost sounds like an issue with the profile itself. I think if it were me I'd try disabling one payload at a time and see if there one specific one that causes the problem. I've only been able to get IPCU( using an encrypted profile) to work dependably with USB and having the profile created on the same IPCU host computer that is used to deploy it.

Found the offending payload. Used the iPad Console tab to determine which payload was having trouble loading. Thx for pointing in the right direction.

I've followed the IOS 4 Education Deployment Guide. The profile I created won't install on any of the 20 iPads I have on the Syncart. I've tried everyting above as well. Are there any clear steps to setting up the iPads correctly so the profile will install?

My experience has been that one of the payloads is usually bad, or attempts to overwrite other settings..such as setting up one exchange account via profile when one is already on the device...I would try a test profile with just the first payload category used..the one where you name it, and see if that works, and also be sure that all of the other payload categories are minimized...I know wi-fi can be especially problematic...we found that setting up wi-fi by profile isn't all that great anyway, since for "who know's what" reason the wi-fi networks configured via IPCU tend to time out when used on the devices and lose connectivity...
