DOES AN IPOD 1ST GENERATION PLAY SOUND?

i have an i phone and have bought a 1st generation ipod touch for my daughter 2nd hand, i have been through all the setting and it says play sound via both speaker and headphones etc... but it dont seem to play any sounds music anything through a speaker. it only plays sounds via head phones?

i need to know is this right for a 1st gen ipod? it only works with headphones? or should it play music and sounds without head phones plugged in?

I need to know before i go back as i dont want to seem stupid! even though i feel it having to post this on here! Thanks in advance to anyone who replys! much appreciated.
