Syncing Calendar from MacBook Pro to MacBook

iSync doesn't sync anything between computers. It is only for syncing Contacts, Calendars and Tasks to third-party mobile phones via a USB or Bluetooth connection.

iSync is for syncing the computer and a mobile phone (of the non-smartphone variety), it doesn't sync between computers.

There are various solutions. The cheapest and simplest solution is to use Google Calendar (calendar.google.com). There you can create calendars and share them, and iCal integrates very nicely with Google Calendar. Create an event in iCal and is automatically synced with Google, and form Google to all your computers and smartphones. It works fantastically, and your calendar also becomes accessible from the web (you can even share free/busy info with others).

The next easiest, but at a cost of $99/year is using MobileMe. Apple has syncing with their MobileMe service in each of their contact, e-mail, and calendar apps. It works well, but only works well with MobileMe-enabled apps.

Finally, if you install OS X server on a Mac in your home, you can setup OS X calendaring services, which provides synchronized calendaring to all the machines on your network.

How do you set up calendaring services is OS X?

You could also try Address Book Server (htttp://www.addressbookserver.com) which lets you host your own server and sync contacts and calendar events between your macs.

JD, Have you got the time to spell out how to do this? I have tried several times but seem to get bamboozled by the number of links you have to read and the shear fact that I am not very technically minded. I begrudge paying £59 for MobileMe, which in effect is the same as Google Sync (I think as you explained)! Also every time I have tried, I end up with multiple entires in my calendar.

Any help is appreciated. 🙂

To get going with Google calendar:

1. Go to [Google Calendar|http://calendar.google.com> and click the Create Account button.

2. After you've created an account, you have a default calendar with your name. You can add additional calendars by clicking on the 'add' link under "My Calendars"

3. To add your Google Calendar to iCal, start iCal.

4. Select "Preferences..." from the "iCal" menu, and then click on the "Accounts" item in the preferences toolbar.

5. Click the little "+" in the lower left corner of the dialog.

6. In new account dialog, select "Google" as the account type, and provide the e-mail address and password you used in setting up the Google Calendar account.

7. After you do that, you should be able click on the 'Delegation' tab and check off which calendars associated with your Google Calendar account you'd like to sync with iCal (other people can share their calendars with you, and they will also appear in the delegate list).

Perform the same process on all the machines / accounts that you want synced with Google calendar. You'll actually need to log into Google Calendar in order to share and change permissions on calendars since iCal doesn't support that.
