Installing itunes error - 800736FD

Can someone please help?

When dowloading the new itunes I get the error - HRESULT: Ox800736FD. I have seen B Noir's answers and I know this has something to do with Windows Updates but I cannot manage to rectify this. Previous erros on windows updates history are different to this code (80200010 and 80246005).

Please help....

When you say you "tried those but it still doesn't work", do you mean that they did not fix your windows update problem, or that they did, but iTunes still wouldn't install.

The iTunes VC80.CRT errors associated with update failures are caused by Windows problems which are fixed by fixing the Windows update problem and installing all the outstanding updates.

I think it is important to get Windows update fixed before worrying about iTunes.

Added: actually I realise that I am assuming that you have a VC80.CRT error, is that correct?

Also Here is a link to a b noir thread with this error in case you haven't found it.

Yeah it is a VC80.CRT error.

Re the errors this is what happened - the 80200010 error is just because I wasn;t connected to the internet when windows tried to update so no big deal. This was a stage when my net was down for a few days.

The error 80246005 is the Catroot2 folder. I've followed the instructions on the link for windows update error which is in the command prompt and also restetting the windows update and cryptographic services in the control pannel. The next instruction is to try checking for updates again.

Then when I go to windows update on my computer it says "checking for updates" and stays on this for hours. Should I leave it longer? It says last updates were installed 25/01/11 and most recent check for updates 15/09/2010.

Any ideas?

I think there is one thing that ought to be got out of the way and that is malware.

Try running a full scan with the free version of Malwarebytes:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

At the bottom of the page on 80246005 you are referred on to:
http://support.microsoft.com/ph/6527
In order to request help by email, I don't know if this would be productive, but it might be worth a go.

I see that b noir seems to be posting again so maybe he will join in.

Hiya. polydorus asked if I could stop by.

Working on the principle that usually the Windows Update error message often gives a truer account of the underlying cause of things than the iTunes install error, I'm still thinking we might have an issue with the catroot folder.

As well as permissions or things like read-only settings, disk/folder damage might conceivably be stopping files from writing to the folder. So I think we'd better try a disk check (chkdsk) on the C:\ drive.

There's Vista instructions in the following document.

[Check your hard disk for errors|http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Check-your-hard-disk-fo r-errors]

Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. You'll probably need to schedule the scan to run on restart. The disk check should take quite a while to run (if you're running it on the C). If it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.

Does the disk check find/repair any damage? If so, do your windows updates start installing again?

Hi guys thanks for your suggestions. Unfortunately windows updates is still not working.

This is what I've tried - so I ran the Malwarebytes scan and it found 1 infected file which it deleted. This was a file I downloaded on a music sharing site which was meant to be a zipped album but turned out to be something like a setup.exe file?

I also did the hard disc scan. I'm not sure if it located any errors as I left it scan for a while when I wasn;t home then the computer restarted.

However now when I restrat the computer it comes up with an Apple Syn Notifier.exe error message about being unable to locate a component because the Core Foundation.dll was not found. I assume this is to do with apple itunes. I've already uninstalled itunes and all apple programs (quick times, bonjour etc).

Do you have any other suggestions? Should I try emailing the windows error email?

Thanks

Corefoundation.dll is a component of Apple Application Support.

A quick thing to try:
Go to Control Panel Programs and find Apple Application support and select repair, You can also access repair by right clicking in the program. I don't remember offhand if Vista and Windows 7 look the same.

If it doesn't work, try disconnecting from the internet then disabling security software while trying again.

That one is actually the MobileMe control panel acting up ... another Apple program that uses Apple Application Support. In most cases the messages on startup are related to an out of date MobileMe version not working well with a higher version of AAS, but in this case it's probably being produced because AAS isn't actually installed at the moment. To get rid of the messages on startup in the meantime (until we can get AAS installed), uninstalling the MobileMe control panel should do the trick.

Back to the iTunes/AAS/Updates install issues. Could you walk us through what happened when you ran the sfc /scannow? Did the scan go through okay, or did you get an error message instead? If you got an error message, what did it say?

Feb 3, 2011 7:44 PM in response to rasgongorilla

Okay ... sounds like there's nothing amiss with the sfc, but it just isn't touching the source of our problem.

Thoroughly experimental stuff now, so I'd consider perhaps getting a second opinion prior to proceeding.

I'm still concerned about the catroot2 folder. If it's damaged in a way that chkdsk doesn't recognise, then renaming it might be the way to go. I'd try *2. Rename the Catroot2 folder* from TaurArian's post in the following thread at Microsoft Answers:

[SP2 error code 80242016-will not install|http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistawu/thread/d0ad1b6 1-2b90-4c2f-9fdc-5db63fca4ec4>

Excellent question. According to all the literature I can track down at Microsoft about it, if there isn't a catroot2 folder, Windows automatically regenerates the folder. (The same does not go for the catroot folder, so be careful not to rename that one instead.)

If a new catroot2 isn't regenerated, name the old one catroot2 again. (So, say, call the other one catroot2OLD, and if all does not go according to the literature and a new catroot2 isn't generated, just drop the OLD from the name to get the catroot2 folder back.)

Hi b noir

I followed the link for renaming the Catroot2 folder. When I tried to type in the line into cmd.exe - ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 oldcatroot2 - it advised that "the system cannot find the file specified".

I tried the next few steps and I couldn't see any of the files - tmp*.cat in the following folder: %systemroot%\system32\CatRoot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}

I also tried some of the other steps in that link such as naming the software distribution folder and reinstalling the windows update agent.

Its still not working and I have now also noticed the windows update error of - 8008005.

What do you think, is it the catroot2 folder? Are there any other options or would it be easier to clean boot or reload windows?

Thanks for your help!
